Hyles-Anderson College / Re: HAC chapel preachers & their sermons
« on: January 09, 2019, 02:40:54 PM »
Has Mike Fish's sermon "Ding Dongs, Devil Dogs, and Ho-Hos" been mentioned yet?

Classic line: "I'm still up here chewing on my ding dong".

Gene, You just got your first "Standing Ovation!"

Sweet!  What's that redeemable for??

Ok, here's the story.  Evening College chapel between '97 and '01.  The idea of the sermon was clever and easy to remember: don't be these certain things.  I THINK the props were Devil Dogs (cakes), Ho Ho's, and Ding Dongs.

His point was that you shouldn't be a Devil Dog....don't be part of the devil's crowd and living like the world.  He then ate one of the Devil Dogs and threw the other one to a staff member for a laugh.

Same with Ho Ho's...talked about promiscuity, fornication, adultery, etc.  Ate one and threw the other to a staff member.

He got to the Ding Dong.  Preached about being mature in the Lord.  Ate the Ding Dong and threw the other one to a staff member.  I kid you not, he said (because he had no water and found it hard to keep talking):

"I'm still chewing on my Ding Dong".  It was -what seemed like- an eternity of silence.  I can't remember exactly what happened next.

I was told that Dr. Owens said out loud, "That must hurt".  In my mind, I hear it and think it happened.  But I'm not sure.

Regardless, after the eternity of silence and shock laughter ensued.  He tried to finish his sermon but he might as well have shut his Bible right then and there.

Never made it out on cassette as far as I know.
It was Daryl Whitehouse who said something, and Jeff Owens just lost it.

I'm glad someone else here was aware of it.  Did it make it to cassette?

Does anyone remember Bob Marshall's "Don't Be a Prick" sermon?
That was another classic.

He stood there and explained how the Airmen  would call certain officers "_ricks" behind their backs.
He took the verse from Acts, from Saul's conversion, "it is hard to kick against the pricks".

For weeks after that, we debated on whether or not Bob knew what he was saying.

You can't make this stuff up!

earnestly contend

How could he not have known?

Wasn't it Daryl Moore who got up afterwards and warned the student body against using the word or quoting the sermon?

Yes, I was there for that sermon.  Bro. Moore was big about keeping our language pure.  He hated words like "brownnosing" and any "substitute words."  After the message, he directly addressed the "dorm guys" about never calling anyone a "-rick."
Meanwhile he was doing all those bad words with his babysitter....

Schaap hosted a Ruckmanite conference and gave Gail Riplinger an honorary doctorate for her work defending Ruckmanism.

However, it is true that he was not KJO. Nobody is KJO. The people who claim to be KJO got their doctrine from Peter Ruckman, not from the KJV.

Schaap did not -  Jack Hyles did in 1996 @  Pastor's School

Both Johnnie and Elaine Colsten are great examples of faithfulness

Of course, this would mean the church leadership would have to admit he was guilty of such sin.

Really?  How many times and in what form do you require to understand that the church leadership for years has not only admitted the sin but preached about the sin by name, by position, by offender and even Brother Hyles formally from the pulpit has not only publicly admitted such but directly spoke on a Sunday Night before PS of March of 1991 when I was there but was not a church member that DH had horribly sinned and the membership  was to have no contact with him any further.  Multiple repeated attempts were made by leadership to contact those who wish to prop him back up in ministry to warn them about not doing it.

The initial reactions and not disciplining him were absolutely wrong.  It created a mess.  On both sides.  Bro Wilkerson did biblically what he was to do in dealing with church discipline with JER.  But her and her ilk did not want to use biblical methods to resolve this issue.   Her recollections in this "story" have pieces of truth enough to get one to believe it was true but the facts of the matter that we who were there at the time know the truth of the matter and others of us also know the truth of continued sin that led to the demise of a marriage and missionary ministry. But we dare not think for a moment that those matters should be brought to church discipline now do we.  It doesn't fit the #MeToo narrative.  RED AWAY Snowflakes!  You will see someday the truth.

RIGHT ON -   It's amazing how many people "get saved" (again ) or "remember more details" when they get caught.

Was Dave Hyles guilty of Statutory Rape with Joy?  I think without a doubt.
Did he "hold her down..." -  I have my doubts, but who knows.
Did Joy have a reputation @ HAC for being.... loose?  Definitely

I think it's funny we don't hear a peep.... until it's convenient for her.

P.S. -  I think Dave should serve out his life in Prison for what he did to her and others like her.  But -  It doesn't give her an excuse on continued sin.

How does everyone feel about the explanation from WE that Jack Hyles didn't have to accept the eyewitness account because WE had not written down Dave Hyle's license plate number?

My opinion is that Hyles always did whatever he could to deny Dave's actions no matter how credible the source was. Well, not just Dave's. Other sexual predators got the same "hear no evil" treatment too, actually.

I am pretty confident that WE has not been preaching out an the past couple years.  His health is really waning.  I don't feel like WE should apologize to the nation.  It seems he has made things right with his daughter and has given formal statements to the powers that be (not a MOG).  I am very happy to hear this.

I don't think that WE was saying that he accepted the account.  Rather, WE pursued it further to get JH to believe.  WE is the one who pushed JH enough to remove DH from the Hammond area.  Sadly, JH found DH a place to prey upon others.

Jack Hyles was dead before Bob Gray's sin became public.  Not sure, but I think it was in 2006.

Three Comments...

1.  As far as David Hyles, I hope they find a way to "LOCK HIM UP!, LOCK HIM UP!..."

2.  Dr. Evans still preaches out a bit, and I think perhaps he has preached for the Pastor of the church David is associated with.  The old timers such as Russell Anderson, Bob Gray, etc. worship Dr. Evans.  If he really felt awful about this, I would think he would make a big "splash" by going public, and demanding David apologize to his victims (as a start)

3.  I'm wondering how things would've been different.... If Dr. Hyles had confronted David, and stood him up on a Sunday night to apologize, and ask the church to forgive him, and announce that he would be stepping down from the ministry.  I wonder if Sumner's article would have even happened, let alone the whole Schaap situation.
( I have no doubt that is how the current Pastor of FBCH would handle things if it was his son. )

Hors-d'oeuvres will be served directly afterwards here in the ward.

Just announced...

"Great Prizes Will Be Given"

The Pastor who brings the most delegates will receive a case of Binaca.

In order to make this contest attainable for all size churches, we will average the following criteria:
1.  Distance of miles the church traveled to get to the Reunion
2.  Total number of registrations
3.  Total percentage of church attendance that attends

Just curious about his leaving the Thailand Team.... not too unusual in itself, but interesting that he chose to make Eric Capaci's Gospel Light Baptist Church his sending church, instead of FBCH.

Any information?
