a lot of it reminds me of what i hear where i live... .. not at home in our house.. but going around town talking to some of my friends... and especially when stopping by at the starbucks downstairs when entering or exiting the building.... ....the chicken littles are everywhere crying about the coming doom and the current "tyranny" - even when none of what they fear is happening or even about to happen......

there are also other types of birds making noise on this - the caged parrots.... . ..not a single person i have talked to has seen the prices of anything here go up.... in fact it has been the opposite... .prices have either gone down or stayed the same... . yet they claim trump has "destroyed the economy" - because they heard someone say it on cnn or msnbc.... i am tempted to start asking them if we should call them polly and if they also want a cracker.... ... it;s gotten that ridiculous.......

Has anyones view on the Trump tariffs changed?

Well, a month or so ago, Junior Trudeau was out, his successor was an elitist who had never been elected to public office, and going into a national election, the Conservatives had a 20-point lead in the polls.

Then Trump began blabbing about tariffs and annexing Canada, and suddenly the Liberal party, which was hand-wringing over First Nation genocide and mass graves full of children, turned into flag-waving, rah-rah Canadian jingoists on a dime. And of course the electorate bought it, hook, line, and sinker, since so much of our Canadian identity is tied up in not wanting to be American.

Thanks a whole lot, Donny.

It looks like an Albertan secession has just entered into the realm of possibility.

Actually, I think your new government's 'green' economy will do more to grow conservatism in Canada than a nominally conservative victory would have done.

It won't be painless. These things never are.

In my opinion, we Americans need to take the latest Canadian results as an emphatic "NO" to the annexation proposal, and we need to accept and affirm the will of the Canadian people. It is time for us as a nation to repudiate the imperialistic spirit that supports annexations of Canada, Greenland, Panama Canal and Gaza.

"I am an anti-imperialist. I am opposed to having the eagle put its talons on any other land." - Mark Twain, 1900

"We cannot repudiate the principle of self-government in the Philippines without weakening that principle here. . . . The spirit which will justify the forcible annexation of the Philippines will justify the seizure of other islands and the domination of other people. . . . "
- William Jennings Bryan, 1900

"No nation will have the God-given right to exploit other nations. Older nations will have the privilege to help younger nations get started on the path to industrialization, but there must be neither military nor economic imperialism. . . . There can be no privileged peoples. We ourselves in the United States are no more a master race than the Nazis. And we cannot perpetuate economic warfare without planting the seeds of military warfare." - Vice President Henry Wallace, 1942. (Yes, I know, Wallace was a pinko, but he was right about this).

Does this extend to Russia's attempted annexation of Ukraine and or the Crimean Peninsula? I ask rhetorically.

I don't understand Trump's calls to annex Canada. Surely, he knows it would never work. It certainly is of no benefit to anyone....

I still believe we're better off with the Biden puppet show out of office. But at what price?

Despotism over liberty. Speaks well for the Canadians.

Either way, Trump's goals are about the Chinese threat.

Pfft. Western separatism and discontent has been part of Canadian politics since the 1970s, when the elder Trudeau nationalized Alberta's energy industry. There hasn't been a serious effort to secede in 50 years. I doubt they're going to start now.

And Alberta premier Danielle Smith is no more a fan of Trump's tariffs than any other leader.
