Best friends aged 16 lost at SEA after going paddleboarding

This was a BIG local news story. It also takes place in Cedar Key, which is an area we spend a lot of time fishing, duck hunting and hanging out since my in-laws have an RV in the area, so I’m very familiar with the waters and the locals. This is why I call it “sort of fake news.”

First, from all reports, these idiotic teenagers went out in terrible marine conditions sharing an inflatable paddle board. Oh, and to boot, they supposedly had no paddle (using their hands instead) and no life jackets, marine radio, cell phones, etc.

Second, although the winds and waves were rough, the local area they drifted in is notoriously shallow. Outside of the channel markers, the depth of the water is anywhere from six inches to six feet, with an average depth of probably three feet. It’s basically a boat graveyard because of how shallow and rocky it is. You have to really know where you are or you’re going to lose a lower engine unit.

Third, according to a report I heard from a local charter fishing captain who also assisted with the rescue search, these same two girls were spotted back at it the very next day with no life jackets or paddles!

These girls cost the Coast Guard, marine sheriff’s, game wardens and volunteers hundreds of thousands of dollars in manpower, time, fuel, etc. Their parents should be sent a large bill to repay! 😡

Aw, c'mon. You you didn't smile even a little? :geek:

You have to admit the story makes an interesting parallel.

Yeah, but it was still pretty early in the a.m. when I read it. Anyway, people are pretty upset with these girls and their families.
