Things once considered Sin and may still be.

While in the AOG, had a pastor who always would take off his watch on the podiu while preaching, and asked him about that,"was it to keep track of the time?"
No he answered, was tat some of the older saints held to ONLY wedding rings could be worn as jewelry, so in order not to offend, took of his wristwatch
We had a guest speaker who, in the process of removing his watch, asked if we knew what it meant when he did that. Absolutely nothing. 😆

I liked him a lot.

I believe the wearing of jewelry was the issue in which the Church of God and the Church of God of Prophesy parted ways over.

If that were the reason, one would think he wouldn't wear the infernal thing into the church to begin with and make a show of his removing it.

What good is a righteous display if no one gets to see you do it? 😉

Here's some more I can add:

Facebook
Riding in cars with a girl unchaperoned
Women wearing sleeveless dresses
Tanning beds
Not having kids immediately after getting married.
Dating, not using the "courtship model"
Any touch of the opposite sex.
Beards.

One crazy rule at the Bible college I attended was that you couldn't grow a beard when school was in session, but if you had a beard you could keep it.

All I can think of at the moment. Probably can add some more later.

Crazy stuff from the Western NC/upstate SC camp meeting crowd.

"What are we doing wrong, do you think, Pastor?"

We had a thread some years ago where a rule like that at PCC came up. Basically, my take on it was that you were allowed to have a beard, as long as you didn't grow it on campus when the term was in session. When I see that foolishness, I have to ask, if it's all right to have a beard, why isn't it all right to grow it whenever I please? Looking unshaven for a few days is a natural and necessary part of the process.

I never understood that rule about the beard.. also had to have permission to fill a pulpit on an interim basis. Crazy.

It used to be that wearing a beard (or any sort of facial hair) was highly frowned upon. Not so much for those who were in "laity" but definitely for the clergy. I had a moustache and sideburns in the 80s but when I noticed that none of my favorite "Preechers" had any facial hair, I shaved mine off as well because I wanted to be a "preecher" myself.

I'm not sure when this changed but not it looks like many of the radical KJVO types all got "buzz-cuts" and a full, bushy beard! Was it Spamderson that made this look fashionable?

A lot of the "Reformed" types have also adopted beards but they obviously haved no affiliation with Spamderson or the Radical KJVO crowd. I had a beard for a while after leaving the "Model IFB Church" and I can only guess that some who saw me out and about in town must've thought I had gone straight to the devil!:ROFLMAO: I am clean-shaven now by choice - mainly because the wife prefers me this way.

As I understand it the beard thing came from two places. One was the military banning them in response to gas warfare where whiskers interfered with the seal of a gas mask. That created a cultural norm that defined the proper look for a man. The second was the adoption of facial hair by the countercultural movement of the beatnik movement and then the anti war protesters and the hippies. I suppose that an argument could be made that it was an early issue in what would become the culture wars.

Short hair and groomed beard became a thing in the late 2000s or early 2010s thanks to hipster culture. I'd like to think a bunch of fundy preechers (like Spamderson) saw a bunch of 20somethings sporting that style and grudgingly conceded that at least their hair wasn't long, so they weren't hippies. :)

My guess is the "young, restless, Reformed" crowd affected the same style for much the same reasons: being countercultural, reaffirming traditional masculinity, and perhaps historically identifying with Reformed heroes like John Calvin, John Knox, or Charles Spurgeon--whose own beards may or may not have been a response to clean-shaven Roman Catholic clergy. Spurgeon once famously called a beard "a habit most natural, scriptural, manly, and beneficial."

The Patriarchy, Family Integrated Church, Vision Forum (Doug Phillips), Bill Gothard movements have been very creative in coming up with sins.

Young people (men and women) not allowed to move out from Mom and Dad without permission, until they get married.
Women should not attend college or work outside the home.
Women should not vote. (This is one of Doug Wilson's big issues)
No one should attend college, even Christian college, against the wishes of the parents.
Women are not allowed to wear slacks or sleeveless dresses.
No dating allowed, only arranged courtship, during which the couples must be chaperoned at all times.
No birth control allowed.
No borrowing or mortgages allowed.

Daisy Duke, eh? Being so separated, I'm amazed he's so aware of a look, let alone one that passed over 40 years ago.
Talk of shaggy too! Somebody stuck on the 80s. Probably still hammering the Beatles and wire rim glasses too!

If you were to google most anybody who is known for their connection with the civil war, particularly those in the military, you will find no shortage of facial hair. Men were recognized and described by their beards.

If your daughter looks like Daisy Duke, she may have worse problems than her choice of shorts.

Here is a start of the list of things that were once preached against in my lifetime.

Shorts of any type on guys and pants or shorts on women
Going to the movies (drive ins were doubly bad)
Some types of eye wear
Dice in games or any other use.
Betting or gambling of any type.
Raffles
All forms of playing cards regardless of game (novelty games like Uno, Flinch, Rook, Touring, Pit and Old Maid were ok).
Dungeons & Dragons
Riding your bike on Sunday
Shopping on Sunday (except for the pharmacy)
Any modern music
Dances
High heels (men or women)
Any type of jewerly on guys (wedding ring & dog tags were exempt)
Thin ties
Pierced ears
Any sports on Sunday (in person or on TV)
Pepsi when Michael Jackson and was the spokesperson and Coke when Elton John was doing commercials.

Here is a partial list of the things that were commonly considered wrong when I was a kid.

What do you think.

Betting and Gambling in my opinion is the one that is a sin. None of the others in themselves.

My Grandma raised Wesyln Holiness, and they did a hem check going in, as ladies only were allowed to show off ankles, and my Mother while on their farm played old main card game when parents drove into town, but hd to make sure when they saw the car coming back to get those cards locked back up and be reading their bibles when parents arrived
