My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

I have so very little of ANYTHING from fifty years ago. I guess I consider that both a blessing and a curse. I did have some letter that my mother wrote me while at HAC (back in the dark ages of letter writing :)) and would love to read them again, but they were destroyed in a flood years ago...

What ever happened to Jack Rose?

I did not know him as a teen, but I figured he was looked upon favorably by the establishment, giving him a faculty position which he held a half dozen years or so. It seemed afterwards, he faded into relative oblivion.

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

You know, Sherry, if we or anyone who attended with us in those days, were paying attention, we learned to keep our eyes on our all faithful God, and He alone, as the author and finisher of our faith. Our dependence on human flesh will fail us every time. Great is the LORD and greatly to be...

    Deaths Of HAC Students

I did not know them. It is most sad and tragic. I am grateful to God that He is the divine arbiter of all deeds and will judge accordingly in His great wisdom.

    Deaths Of HAC Students

I hope I'm not being inappropriate, but how did they pass away?

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

He was capable and dynamic. Without question JH intended for DH to succeed him one day as pastor. Then we all learned in due time that DH had a bunch of moral problems that disqualified him from the ministry. It is a tragedy that repeats itself many times over in church lore.

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

That is a fact. However, I wondered about what Toby said about more people leaving FBC over DH than the Nischick issues, because DH's issues did not come to light until after he had been gone from the church for several years. I concede that there is much evidence that his problems took root in...

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

Why do you believe that? I mean DH had been gone from the church more than a half dozen years.

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

I have actually know a few people in my life that in a progressive manner began to confuse the reality of their lives with fantasy. They began to TRULY believe things that were obviously untrue about themselves. It leads to a bad end. I can't say that I KNEW Jack Hyles. I'm not sure than many...

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

You had to have been there in that time. I remember his "bodyguards" waiting on him to come out of his office on the way to the pulpit and how they walked with him that fifty feet in the alley that connected the office wing to the auditorium. We thought he needed protection like the president...

Who Did You KNOW Got Expelled?

For all the chatter about "discipline" at HAC, I really don't know many people who got expelled when I was there decades ago. There were a couple over doctrinal stuff in 76-77. I can remember one girl and guy that got expelled (allegedly) for being too intimate in about 1980. But that's about...

    Highest Enrollment Ever

I think there's a lot of truth in your observation. However, I grew up in the deep south in the sixties. Pretty much all of our mothers of the time were born in the 1920s or early 30s. Every one of them that I knew wore pants (perhaps not to church), except my mother and I don't think it was a...

    Why am I shocked?

I never even thought about that, but I was more righteous than most HAC students:) I really can't remember much about laundry and until Jo brought it up, had forgotten about going to the coin operated. But I'm sure I was barely competent to keep my clothes clean. My mama spoiled me like that 😇

    Convicting. Or Should Be.

And to me, that is the theological slippery slope. Absolutely, God's Word addresses all the issues of all the days. But I think sometimes we can get so carried away with the doctrines (of say, life, sexuality, moral issues, modesty in attire, etc.) that many churches realize one day that it has...

    Why am I shocked?

Actually, if I knew it, I had forgotten that -- not being a female student! But, yikes! How did that work? I mean, you can't exactly take thirty people by bus to the coin operated laundry and get all that done in a couple of hours, right? I do remember a certain coin operated laundry a few of...

    Why am I shocked?

I get the "dad" thing, except that he wasn't! I loved the man in many ways, but I think he was a narcissist and loved the adoration of the flock. Some in particular, more than others. He wanted to be the hero of everyone's world. He had a Walter Mitty complex.

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

I know all the arguments, but I've never seen the harm in letting the kids dress up like cowboys and Indians and trick or treat. I did it when I was a kid and Satan didn't grab me.

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

Bro. Hyles was a pretty big sports fan. I remember when I was there that he had Bill Madlock of the Chicago Cubs speak at the church. Madlock won four batting titles and was no lightweight. We also had Olympic gold medal wrestler Ben Peterson speak.

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

I barely remember Sauzer's. You mean you would get off work and go by for coffee and pie? I mean, that just sounds like an act of maintaining one's sanity. You mean the rule was that if it was after curfew, you weren't allowed to make a stop on the way in? I really would like to get a copy of...

    Convicting. Or Should Be.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, I just think the church and its pastors would be far more faithful to its mission to preach the gospel message consistently than to entangle itself in the political issues of the hour. I really don't attend to hear anyone's political opinions.
