My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

It is articles just like that that make me wonder what I was thinking fifty years ago. I guess the answer is that I wasn't thinking much at all. And that shames me.

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

Jim Vineyard was a super successful (big numbers) bus guy when Hyles brought him in. He had put up big numbers for Jerry Falwell. He did the same at FBC. He was not an academic in any respect, but that didn't stop him from trying to replicate the FBC/HAC model in Oklahoma. He saw what would...

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

Yes. I think that is a fair analogy of those times. I cannot speak for the female students, but for the males it was very much like a paramilitary organization. You were ordered what to do and expected to do it, with no push back. Vineyard carried this out further than anyone. Frankly, I think...

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

In all fairness, what I saw was not “bend over and take your licks.” He would set up scenarios where the guy would be unsuspecting and then swat him on the ass when he wasn't expecting it. Then he and his buddies would get a big laugh out of it. It was truly juvenile.

He was a bully. Hard stop.

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

It was done in an impromptu, juvenile and prank style fashion, but yeah, I saw it. And I say again, I wondered how Jack Hyles let it go on. But Vineyard was on his way out when I witnessed it.

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

I do remember the paddle, but I distinctly remember him using it on male college students, especially smaller ones. He and his minions would get a big laugh out of it and would threaten all types of unmanly actions if the guys breathed a word. That didn't sit well with me and I have not...

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

I hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread, but I just thought of something about my HAC experience. It's been almost fifty years ago so the details are sketchy. The Fall of 1976 was my first semester and the last year that Jim Vineyard would serve on staff at the church and college. I...

    The King James Bible?

I first heard of Peter Ruckman about the time I was attending HAC (76-81). I thought he was a very intelligent man. But after listening to him a few times, I though he was one of the nastiest SOBs I had ever come across and never wanted anything to do with him. But I ran across a few people who...

    The King James Bible?

Actually, I think you may be right. I believe several students were expelled in the seventies for promoting KJV onlyism. I'm not sure I know how to articulate this, but if the KJV was (always) the only inspired text for 20th century believers, how come so many didn't know about it until the...

    The King James Bible?

I just found this in the Hyles Anderson College Doctrinal Statement in 1977 - “Scriptures: The Bible, including the Old and New Testaments in the original autographs is the inerrant, infallible, and inspired Word of God. The Scripture is the final authority in all matters of faith and...

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

In August or September 1976, I packed up all I needed for school in a 1971 Plymouth Duster and drove myself 800 miles to HAC. I was barely 18. I can't believe today that I did that. I would not have trusted my sons at 18 to do that. That Duster was indestructible and to this day, one of the most...

John MacArthur went to Heaven last night. This is his first day there. He finished well. Glory to God.

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

I really didn't know anyone either. I had met one guy, who lived about thirty miles from me. We spoke by phone a couple of times prior to my arrival. He was a year ahead of me and knew the lay of the land at HAC. When I arrived on campus, his parents were off loading all of his stuff and were...

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

We were all young. In time we learned that faithfulness to God could look much different than it did at HAC. I am tempted to beat myself up over my HAC years. It delayed my life’s work several years, including going back and getting a degree from a state university so I could progress. But I...

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

I have never heard anyone state what went into that decision. The accommodations were fine, but the distance was significant. Our most famous (I guess) Balmoral resident, Jack Schaap, joined us mid term in January. I remember his first day.

My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

I remember my first day on campus in the Fall of 1976 and being told I was going to be in a dormitory at Balmoral Woods, about 25 miles away. I didn't like it, but I had no choice. That evening we all gathered in the old chapel and Bro. Hyles told us to cut "quit" and "compromise" out of our...

    Number of students at HAC

As I write this, I understand that Dr. MacArthur is on the threshold of Heaven. I know there was some controversy about him decades ago. I guess there is for most every minister of renown. I liked the man. I thought he was solid and during Covid he courageously refused to close the doors of the...
