Let's talk about the word "standards"

I'd have just asked him why he was so foolish as to wear a suit coat on a ski hill. Would he wear a suit coat while scuba diving? Coal mining?

    Parable of the tares

"The saints" is a common name for Christians, i.e. the church. How come that isn't "saying so"? It comes down to whether you need to jump through a myriad of dispensational hoops to understand the Bible properly. I do not believe that to be the case.

    Parable of the tares

Where does the author of Revelation inform us that he is using "saints" differently than in the rest of the New Testament?

    Parable of the tares

Who are the "saints" mentioned 13 times from Revelation 5 to Revelation 20?

    Parable of the tares

It doesn't. Christ says that believers and unbelievers belong together in the world until the judgment, at which point the believers are gathered, and the unbelievers destroyed. That's pretty simple, and it can't be shoehorned into a particular eschatology, to the exclusion of all others.

Franklin Graham’s evangelism in his commercials

I've got a few friends who came to Christ at the Billy Graham crusade here in Ottawa in 2000--so they went forward and prayed the "canned prayer" at a mass-evangelism event. Was it genuine? Sure seems to be. We can fault Billy Graham on points of theology, methodology, or association with Roman...

Let's talk about the word "standards"

"Too little clothing" was a marker of social status, not indecency. Slaves routinely wore short tunics or loincloths--it was seen simply as a necessary and suitable garment for their kind of labour. Conversely, prostitutes were required to wear togas. The basic Roman garment was a...

    Locking Out Latecomers

I'd say that for the chronically late, a well-placed sermon about showing appropriate respect for the gathering of God's people would not go amiss.

Deny entry? No. It's not a theatre. But I think it's fair to have the ushers guide people to seats that minimize disturbance for other congregants. If a prayer is in progress, our ushers will hold people at the entrances until it's finished, then let them find a seat. I often enter the service...

Candice Owens and the Spanish Inquisition

I watched that debate yesterday. Feh. Wilson didn't come across particularly well, either--he didn't establish his own thesis. But Owens basically proved that she feels herself immune to the burden of proof--at one point expressing "full confidence" that France and Israel were implicated in...

Let's talk about the word "standards"

I'm sure in the eyes of some, it does, even if your aversion to movies is a matter of taste rather than principle. We all need to set our own boundaries, and that's a good. Mine will be looser than others' in some ways, and tighter in others. Where Scripture is silent or ambiguous, we have the...

Let's talk about the word "standards"

Yep. "Standards" aren kind of like an IFB Hadith. The kind of legalism that takes a righteous application of the law, and elevates it to the status of law itself. Some movies are morally objectionable. Since you can't discern infallibly which ones those are, perhaps it is best to avoid the...
