Interesting thoughts to which I agree with most of them.

...and whose "job is to help provide excellent biblical, singable, and affordable music to choir directors and worship leaders."

The title is a little exaggerated - "Critical importance" - meh.

I don't like choirs, but if you do, have at it. I won't criticize you for your preference.

For a long time English Baptists didn't even sing. It all started when they were hiding from persecutors in England - if they sang they would have been discovered. It eventually became a habit and even forbidden when they had some liberty. I bet they understood "Singing with grace in your hearts" better than anyone. Choirs are great but essential? No. Grace in your heart is essential. Being Spirit filled is essential.

One congregation of English Baptists , around Bunyan's day, was invited to assemble with the Presbyterians in the same village.
The Baptists were outraged that they were asked to remove their hats, and at the choir, both of which they considered papist.
Needless to say, it didn't last one service.

I thought the Baptist?s brought their drum set and the Presbyterians brought their caj?n and they couldn?t play together.

I don't believe that they are "critical", but I do think that they are good to have; I generally agree with the reasons cited in the article.

Not at all. My Episcopal parish gets along very well without one. We do however have a very talented music director, who composes out music in house, in "World Music" style, but mostly based on tradiioal sources. The new result is that it somehow manages to sound both modernr and traditional at the same time, normally an improssuble feat.

All I can say is that church music—music of most kinds moves my heart. I often went to the altar at church service because I had been moved by the words of the songs being sung. This is also a reason to pay close attention, pastors and music directors, to what your music department does for you in your church. If you are using them to get folks down the aisle, then shame on you. Manipulation of the spirit becomes a dangerous thing, in far too many cases. I was often not sure if the Holy Spirit had anything to do with my trip up the aisle. That is what SHOULD have moved me.

Incidentally, does anyone remember the name of the hymnal used at FBCH in the 1970s and 80s?
