Be not truckin

My favorite Dead song.

Which isn't saying much.

does that song have any relation to the vintage t-shirts that have this logo on them?... ..i saw this one on ebay but they wanted too much money for it.... and it;s kinda faded out anyway.....

Yup. Popular saying back in the day. Not sure what inspired what or if both the drawing and the song came from the same source. The artwork is from the same S.F. scene that the Grateful Dead came from.

Edit

Here's a bit of history. BTW, the T-shirt in the picture is likely an unauthorized knock off of the original comic.

As for truckin', I don't do that. I'm bussin'. I plan to do that till I'm 65. I'll have my CDL for two years after that. I'm open to some subbing, maybe, but after my CDL expires at age 67, NO MORE. Carrying a CDL for 44 years will be plenty for me.

the guy selling it even admitted it was probably a bootleg shirt that was sold in head shops at the time.... but he wanted 500 dollars for it....😲 . even a vintage iron on transfer from the time to make your own shirt is going for 300 dollars.... there are a lot of similar shirts with similar designs..some even claim to be "vintage" but they are all new shirts....🙄 ...and i don;t really want one that bad anyway..... especially not if it could make people think i;m a dead head.... 😵

Bit more history...

that;s pretty cool.... i remember my dad telling us once he had t-shirts with the logo on it... plus a few others... when he was a teenager.... . but one thing we did not find was any grateful dead records in the boxes that had all his old vinyl records in them.....

my dad let his cdl expire too... . plus all of his paramedic licenses and other job certifications too in past 2 years.... .... he had a ton of cards for all kinds of things related to medical work - commercial diving - ship rigging etc... ... . i remember the continual recerts could be a pain in the butt... most of them involved a physical which he does not like going through... . i use to go with him when he did his paramedic recerts like advanced cardiac life support - haz mat and trauma life support etc.... and even got certified in acls myself at one time when i was in pre-med - as a requirement for emergency room clinicals.... but after that i just went with him coz i always learned a lot of new stuff there and was fascinated by it....

the only thing i am licensed for at the moment that has to be continually renewed is hunting... (archery only.... no dog and knife tag).... years ago i trained to be a licensed bicycle mechanic... i don;t think that one expires.....i got it so i would know how to fix and maintain my own bikes.... but i work on friends bikes sometimes too..... ..i considered getting licensed and certified as an archery instructor.... but since i don;t teach for a school and mostly teach for free ... and don;t hand out any certificates to students they said it wasn;t necessary... ..but who knows... ..if the state ever decides to prohibit even private instruction of things like archery without a license then that could change.... i would probably just stop teaching though....

I had one of those. And the guy who made the song famous, Peter Accardi, got saved, and became a Baptist evangelist. He was the preacher when I got saved.

Interesting fella. Caught a couple snippets of his preachin'... visually, he went from a long hair hippy in the 70s to a clean cut Baptist preacher in the 80s to a long hair longer beard biker looking type last year.

When I get some time, I'll evaluate his preeeechin'.

The song and cartoon come from the same era. But the song "Truckin'" is about the Grateful Dead being on tour (literally trucking around the country). On the other hand, the Robert Crumb cartoon depicted on the T-shirt is part of a larger comic depicting the lyrics of "Truckin' My Blues Away," a 1936 blues song by Blind Boy Fuller, in which "truckin'" seems to be a euphemism for ... well, something else.

Independent Baptist, lover of Hyles, Old school, King James only preacher. But he did preach the gospel clearly all those years ago.

Wow that's a transformation... I'm kinda curious about the long hair and beard bit... I thought a KJVO Hyles type would eschew such an appearance.

i didn;t know that.... but i guess it;s another good reason i should be glad i didn;t buy one of those vintage shirts and try to wear it..... .... i don;t know much about the grateful dead.... however i do know that the image of the girl between the green haired weirdo and the skeleton in the artwork on the video comes from the "birth of venus" by sandro botticelli....;)

He had long hair back then, but short hair and a long beard now.
