Perhaps this is WHY the military is having problems with recruiting these days? I do not want my kids (or grandkids) even thinking about joining the military these days!

Sad but true. Whereas I used to be Gung-ho about encouraging young men to join the military, I am now hesitant to do so. If for no other reason, because they are taking the focus off of combat readiness. Even the Bible speaks of this: No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. IOW, military personnel are to be about combat and preparation thereof. What our military seems to be obsessed with anymore is social re-engineering instead of military readiness. Aside from the spiritual ramifications, the physical result will be catastrophic should we, God forbid, find ourselves in conflict again.

I think there is something much more sinister going on. The military you and I were a part of was filled with a bunch of God-fearing good ol' country boys who had praying and Bible-quoting mothers and grandmothers and daddies who taught them that the "Only Good Commie is a DEAD Commie!" Our generation was still taught the constitution in high school and that Commies were the enemy! Men who think like this WOULD NEVER go along with the agenda of this current administration! They therefore have to purge toxic men like us from their ranks and bring in those who will do their bidding! Look at the very first thing that Biden said would be his priority after his inauguration: going after DOMESTIC EXTREMISTS (code word for people like you and me)! The oath of enlistment says "against all enemies FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC!" Best way to accomplish this is to fill the military ranks with morally depraved leftist sycophants who will do their bidding and they are doing just that!

Judgment is not coming, it is ALREADY HERE! Judgment must begin with the house of God and the only thing I can think regarding how this may look like is some legitimate and serious persecution is coming! I would love to see someone like Donald Trump elected in 2024 and actually CLEAN THE SWAMP but where was the Church during the Trump administration aside from getting all "Nationalistic" and loving their investment portfolios?

I am praying to God that I am wrong about this but either way, EVEN SO COME LORD JESUS! I am in the LORD's Army and I intend on dying with my boots on!

My youngest brother was in the Navy for two years, and he told us that he had been propositioned on the ship by several of the "homo-types" as he called them. He did his best to avoid these creeps and said he wanted to report them, but, felt like what they did on their off hours even while on the ship was their own business.

I believe sexual activity among crew members is strictly forbidden while aboard ship and underway! This pertains even to heterosexual partners even if they are married to one another.

Sexual harassment is sexual harassment and no means NO! I am sure this is still the policy although it is OK to "ask people out and initiate a consensual relationship that may result in "Boyfriend-Girlfriend" or whatever. If this is what some gay sailors were doing, then politely declining and making it clear that you "Don't go that way" should be sufficient. Should they persist after that, it is harassment and needs to be dealt with.

I was in BEFORE "Don't Ask, Don't Tell!" There certainly were some Sailors who were light in the loafers but they kept it a very tight secret as you may end up getting "Keel-Hauled" or thrown overboard!

One dude in supply on the Forestall was definitely a fop. Had another when I in Pensacola get drummed out. I thought it was BS; didn’t want to believe that about a buddy... but looking back on it I see where the accusation came from and why it was valid.

In fact, now that I think about it, there were several who were queer. I always denied that such could ever be the case because I didn't want to acknowledge the facts.

One got tossed for messing around with young boys. Don't know much other than he was accused and ended up in prison.

I watched a 20/20 report where they caught a sailor setting up a rendezvous with what he believed was a young girl. Of course his career was over at that point. I wonder what if anything would happen to him in today's Navy.

Messing around with underage kids is still illegal (for now) with the offender being subject to long prison terms and registering as sex offenders for life.

There were a number of sailors I served with where it seemed obvious although they were not "out" about it. One was a Third Class AT in a helicopter squadron. Nice guy and a good worker (he was one of my "juniors") but you could just tell. I went on a WESTPAC deployment and came back to find out he had been discharged for being gay. There was another gentleman onboard the Frigate I was deployed on who almost looked like a "Tranny" but I guess everyone gave him the benefit of the doubt. Another one was a Chief Petty Officer who was a "Model Sailor" and very squared away. He was "Sailor of the Year" before he made Chief. He also had quite the rental property portfolio so the Navy was more of a "Hobby" to him than anything else. He never married, no girlfriends, and his mannerisms would lead you to believe he went that way. He was likely quite happy when Clinton was elected and implemented "Don't Ask-Don't Tell."

The Shore Command I was in seemed to be a "Clearing House" for dirt-bags who ended up in all sorts of legal trouble. One First Class had to go home to (an actual) prison every night. Another First Class in my department was court-martialed for some child molestation charge but didn't get busted down or do any prison time. He was an arrogant jerk from what I recall and others I worked with would loved to have beat his butt had they been given the chance and often told me so! There was a LT in the Admin Dept who wasn't so lucky. He was court-martialed for child molestation and was busted all the way down and sent to Leavenworth for about ten years! But the most salacious story I recall was our Department Head (a LCDR) whose wife disappeared under mysterious circumstances! He seemed not too broken up about it and was always bragging about his "Conquests!" He seemed to be a complete immoral psychopath and quite creepy. I did my best to keep my distance from him! We were all wondering when NIS would be coming around to carry him off in handcuffs but it never happened and he eventually transferred back to sea duty. Come to think of it, I met more than a few real "Masterpieces of Depravity" during my time in the Navy!

You know, I think I need to get my "Guns a blazing" a little bit here! The more I think of this the more pissed I become!

I was quite active in my Church during my time in the Navy. It was a huge part of my life. I was a Bus Captain, preached in Children's Church, preached on the streets of downtown San Diego, passed out tracts and witnessed to my fellow Sailors and Marines, and preached at least monthly at the State Prison!

Why didn't the Navy decide to highlight someone as myself who was actively serving the Lord in his local Church? They were very clear with me saying I could not represent the Navy when I was involved in such activities meaning I could not be in uniform while preaching on the streets or whatever. I was fine with this and happily complied.

Seems to me that if this Sailor wants to promote his PERVERTED LIFESTYLE, he should do so on his own time and NOT WHILE WEARING THE UNIFORM OF AN ENLISTED NAVY MAN!

Why does the Navy openly celebrate and promote such perversion while silencing anyone who stands up for truth?

I guess I need to do a little research but am sure if I were the same exact Sailor that I was in the 80s serving in TODAY's Navy, I would likely be standing before my Commanding Officer facing accusations of hatred and intolerance. My evaluations would likely suffer, I would be refused promotions, and would likely face an administrative separation!

Reason #1439 why I do not want my kids and grandkids even thinking about a military career!

Ray, you bring up a valid point. Even the Navy we were in was a moral cesspool. At least the debauchery wasn't sanctioned by the upper echelons. In fact, when we were returning from deployment in 86, MAAs went through the ship confiscating porn magazines.

One problem with a young man joining the Navy straight out of high school is if he wasn’t properly trained by parents, he'd think the debauchery he'd be sure to see was just how "adults" act.

Another issue is, after I got out, I had to learn the lack of privacy that was part of everyday life in boot camp and aboard ship was not normal.

During boot camp, I was a "virgin". Even in my BC days, the thought of prostitution was a huge turn off for me. I was definitely not about waiting for marriage but I didn't want to get together with a woman if she was being paid to do so. I caught a bunch of flak from shipmates for that. They kept promising me they were going to pitch in and buy me "one" once we went on liberty. I approached the Company Commander, (who was clearly not a believer) about the razing I was getting. I told him why I was still "uninitiated" and I didn't want what they were offering. My Company Commander looked me in the eye and said, "Caines, it's obvious you have a lot of self respect." He said to me I don't need to hang out with shipmates if they can't handle the standards I set for myself. His words still resonate with me to this day.

I had a pretty good Company Commander as well. He had a foul mouth but he had a great deal of respect for those who attended Sunday services and encouraged everyone to attend.

I saw my very first porno flick when I was in Millington (in the old BE&E Barracks) and yes, there was nothing but debauchery all around me! I was a brand new Christian and thought I made the biggest mistake of my life when I joined the Navy!

Since you were there pretty much in Millington the same time as I, do you recall a gentleman by the name of Tom Wilson? He was a "Fleet Sailor" coming to AV "A" School and he was a big-time "Bible-Pounder" and an Independent Baptist! I came back to the barracks (S-444 at the time), was quite drunk, and Tom was there at the Quarterdeck with his Bible and started "Witnessing to me" just like the gentleman who had led me to the Lord just over a year prior! I didn't talk to him too much that night, went to bed and slept off the alcohol. I looked around for him later and found him in the laundry room reading his Bible. It got around to the Gospel again and I told him I had trusted Christ a couple years prior, was reading my Bible and listening to Christian radio, but didn't really know what to do next and that I still considered myself a "Roman Catholic!" I told him I wanted to go to Church with him that Sunday (Southside Baptist, Millington) and that was my introduction into the IFB world but the really wonderful thing was that I learned that I could be in the Navy and live for the Lord! I quickly became best friends with two Marines who went to the Church and was going through the same Avionics track as myself! Wasn't too much longer that they had me passing out tracts on Navy Road and preaching on the street in Overton Square!

But yeah, any young and impressionable kid would go into the military and think that smoking, drinking, cussing, and whoremongering are just regular "Things that adults do!"

I thought it was bad when we were in, I can only imagine what it is like now!

I think I was in S-444. That sounds familiar. I remember the HVAC unit that sat in the middle of the four buildings going out as soon as the first heat wave hit in July.

The only name I remember on base was an AV-A instructor, a Marine, Sgt. Harmon. He was CRAZY. I heard he got busted for fraternization.

It was the village person Alex Briley who would wear the navy uniform(fatigues) in the group.

Alex Briley's younger brother, Jonathan (1958–2001), worked as an audio engineer at Windows on the World on the 106th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center and perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In 2005, Jonathan was speculated by several people to be The Falling Man – the figure depicted in an iconic photo of a man falling to his death from the North Tower.[3] He was one of an estimated 100–200 people who died on 9/11 either by jumping from, falling from, or being pushed out of the upper stories of the Twin Towers.
