Boys - Welcome to the Rock

I have it on good authority that Trump, while he likes the nostalgic idea of Alcatraz, is leaning more toward following John Carpenter's model and converting Manhattan Island into a maximum-security prison. He seems to have a grudge with some NY attorneys and judges, and he wants to provide them with some "public housing."

Did you visit it? I knew one person who did. She brought me back a little souvenir.
Yes. I have been there a few times. They point out how over the decades, the damp salty air in the bay broke down the concrete which facilitated the three guys who escaped (or got as far as they did). Had the walls been new, they would not have been able to chisel their way out of their cells. Other factors played into the escape such as lax security... But deteriorated concrete which was easy to chisel played a big part. Imagine how much more deteriorated the concrete is 60+ years later.

Also, there are areas that are closed to the public because the buildings are not safe for people to enter.

I’d like to visit one day, assuming it’s not a working prison!

Nothing to worry about with the island itself. Now, the city surrounding it... that's another story.😖
Yeah, most likely not visiting LA or San Francisco. I think we’re going to be more in the San Diego area.

Apparently it would cost around $350 million to restore Alcatraz to working order. For that money, you could probably build a new, modern prison from scratch.

Is Trump nostalgic for the Roaring 20s?

Biggest concern for me is the fact that all freshwater has to be brought in by boat. Perhaps nowadays a desalination system can be built for the island, but I have no idea what the cost is.

First off, Alcatraz would need to be transferred from the National Park Service back to Department of Corrections (or whoever oversees federal prisons). Then demolition, building and infrastructure... Money issues aside, the project would never be completed before the close of the Trump administration and I can't imagine the next one being committed to this.

It’d be a nostalgic boondoggle.

Trump is the “builder President” who can direct this, so don’t incessantly look for lazy excuses like “structural issues” and “asbestos” and whatnot. The initial tranche of inmates will be given masks to clean it all up to their liking. It will be their new “home,” after all. Perhaps they can get some of the adjacent SCC pervs to help.
