Here's how I'd explain dog:
You can train a dog sufficiently so that it will behave (for the most part) the way you wish even if you're not present. But when you're gone, there's always a chance that dog nature will kick in, and the dog will do something that will not please you when you discover it as you get home.
It's sort of being like a play Christian. You go to church and hear what you should do, and you might behave for a while even after you leave. But human nature inevitably kicks in, and you do what reprobate humans do. A dog returns to its vomit.
Except if the Spirit lives in us, we are never without our master. That's not to say we'll always behave the way our master wishes, because we are still capable of ignoring him. But at least we have our master with us at all times. Even though we will always stray now and then, it eventually comes naturally to listen to his voice.
