Jimmy Swaggart dead at 90

Wow…I didn’t realize he’d lived to be that old!

Swaggart was actually famous in his own right - one of the most visible televangelist of the 70s and 80s, and he was pretty well known before then, too - he had an extensive television reach by the early 1970s in addition to the network of radio stations his ministry owned.

I actually like some of Jimmy’s music. It reminds me of the music I grew up listening to in church in South Carolina. This is a good one:

When I first came to Christ in 1984, I would watch him all the time, not having any discernment at all. I also watched Kenneth Copeland,
 
Never heard him preach once, may have heard snippets of his music. I heard he was a very good singer.
 
If I am not mistaken Jimmy turned all the profits from his records back into the ministry

I guess it just goes to which pond we swim in…Swaggart was much better known than most IFBs, including Hyles…before the scandals.

I would still read books by Ravi Zacharias, his moral failures notwithstanding.

Jimmy Swaggert was/is AOG. So there is that bit of corruption to filter.

My Pentecostal mother loved Swaggert 's preaching. He had a crusade in KC at the time I was dating an RLDS girl (long story) and we went to one of the nights at my mother's behest. I was already a truly re-baptized (denying my first baptism ... 'anabaptist') Southern Baptist.

Mom was praying we would both be 'baptized' in the Holy Spirit speaking in tongues and jumping pews, wanting so much to leap over tall buildings in a single bound...

IFB types really started loving him when he went "Anti-Catlick!"

IFBs have a much higher tolerance of careless-maniacs and their horrible doctrine than they do of those evil Calvinists!!!!

Why? Are you in a position to judge a man’s soul? Are your garments less filthy rags than his? Tell us about how you’ve led a 100% pure righteous life and how we can follow your lead to being sinless.
