Mark Wahlberg on his faith and Hollywood

Reading through Isaiah and listening to Dr McGee's teaching from the book, it's clear that while God is castigating His nation for their political corruption and moral awfulness, God's ultimate charge against His people is their spiritual apostasy. He's had His fill of their sacrifices and their singing to Him. In chapter 29, verse 13, "The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.".

Now, while the prophets spoke to the nation of Israel and the Church is not that nation nor its replacement, the indictment of the human heart is the same. We are in the mess we're in not because our government is corrupt nor our society has deteriorated, those who claim to be His people have turned their hearts away from Him. Oh that we would humble ourselves and turn back to Him! (Whenever I read Isaiah or Jeremiah, I become convicted.)

Now, what does this have to do with the article you

What does the above have to do with the article you linked? I'll have to read it again and refresh the connection but all this recent focus on faith in society even if it comes from a bunch of crackpots, can hardly be coincidence.

I might draw parallels between our exchange in the Asbury thread the other day. It’s hard to discern whether cultural indicators of people seemingly searching for a deeper meaning in life are proof of a movement of the true God, or a deception representative of those who are seeking to provide their own “righteous” purpose and goodness in the fuller sense of life.

Using a microcosmic anecdotal story to represent what I’m saying, I would point to my brother’s conversion experience. He is a lot like me in many, many ways in the way that he thinks. I would give you his long story of conversion, but it would take too much type here. the short version is that he had a born-again experience, and was converted without any doubt in my mind, but over time since his wife was a practicing Catholic he began faithfully attending church with her in order to keep peace in the family. Eventually, he fully converted into Roman Catholicism. He is still essentially the same guy that he was after conversion, only his theological influences have led him to be more deeply entrenched in some of the errors of Catholicism. That story, just typifies what I am trying to say, that people like Wahlberg and scores countless other humans know that there is more to life than the usual humdrum of “success” or “the American Dream”. In that sense, our era is not any different than any other era in human history. The problem we have is trying to look at things from our own limited human perspective and sort out whether or not these peoples quests are borne of legitimate experiences with the true, living God. That’s above my pay grade, but I’m hopeful that it is leading to a biblical real relationship through Christ, in Christ, alone, by faith alone.
