More than 1700 Moody students, parents and alumni allege that there is a problem with the administrations's handling of sexual harassment and assaults at the school that D.L. Moody founded.

This could explain why some of the students at Moody are moody.

MBI was in the news a few years ago, with questions about the propriety of benefits for the MBI president and trustees, like Jerry "The Gambler" Jenkins of "Left Behind" fame.

Update on the latest controversy at Moody (not dated):

Dear Moody Family,

As we finalize the engagement this week of the independent, third-party Title IX consultant/investigator, we want to share a personnel update with you today.

After much prayer and contemplation, Dr. Timothy Arens, who in August 2020 announced his retirement effective at the end of the current academic year in June 2021, decided to begin his retirement early effective as of November 1, 2020.

We have asked the Rev. Roy Patterson, who serves as Director of Community Relations at Moody, to serve as the interim Vice President and Dean of Student Life. The search committee for the new Dean of Student Life, chaired by Dr. Heather Shalley, Moody’s Vice President of Enrollment Services, has been formed and is just beginning its work in light of Dr. Arens' announcement in August that he would be retiring at the end of this academic year.

Ms. Rachel Puente will be taking an administrative leave, effective immediately, pending the completion of the third-party independent investigation.

As a reminder, a copy of our October 19 statement, as well as our October 20 statement and October 20 President’s Chapel are available on our website.

Please be in prayer for all those in transition, and for our campus community as we continue to seek God’s face during this time.

Humbly,

Dr. Mark Jobe, President
Dr. Dwight Perry, Provost

This article is interesting because it gives the details of the financial losses at Moody Bible Institute, as well as enrollment figures - down from 3686 in 2016 to 2870 in 2020. Many Christian colleges are declining in enrollment due to the smaller number of children in Christian families, but I am not sure if that accounts for an enrollment decline of more than 22% in 4 years at MBI.

Conservative evangelical colleges like Liberty, Cedarville and Moody have provided educational alternatives for young people from fundamental Baptist families who may not want to attend an extremist IFBx college. However, all 3 of those colleges have now been in the news for scandals of a sexual nature in the past year.

Maybe, just maybe, that the entire culture is tanking in wickedness and it's not just 'Fundy extremism' that is driving kids away?
Just more food for thought. And I might be wrong about this, but in the Christian college's desire to be 'un-fundy', have they become so much like the world that they have lost their Christian distinctiveness?
And if you lose your Christian distinctiveness, why not just go to a secular university where the secular name alone will open up more job opportunities than a college associated with Christianity?

I was thinking the solution to many of these abuse and assault issues would be mandatory reporting laws for pastors, teachers and school administrators at both schools and colleges.

oh right we have those already.

maybe stiffer fines and penalties for failure to report.
