Honduras is five times bigger than El Salvador, but with half the population. In 1969, Salvador suddenly invaded. Strapping bombs to WW2 cargo planes, Salvador wrecked Honduras's main airport, stalling their air force while the Salvadoran army crashed through the border and captured nine cities.

But the Honduras Air Force bombed Salvador's gas supplies, stalling the invading army. Using left-over WW2 fighters, the two air forces fought the last war with propeller airplanes, and Honduras won. Salvador withdrew, both nations suffered heavily from trade loss, and peace was not reached for another ten years.

Why did they do this? Conflicts over a three-game soccer series, that's why.

By George, some people take their soccer seriously!
