During the third century AD, Mani announced that a gigantic angel had given him a new religion. The religion taught that Christianity and other religions were false, but by combining that best of all of them, you could get a new and better religion.
Part of Mani's new religion was unconditional election. Mani clearly and correctly taught that accepting unconditional election was part of rejecting Christianity. His religion grew rapidly, becoming one of the world's great religions, before dying out in the fifteenth century.
A variety of pagan philosophers adapted Mani's religion to local religions, so not all of them believed the same thing. But all of them believed that by combining the best of Christianity with the best of paganism, you would create a new and better religion.
And, about 100 years after Mani, Saint Augustine would become the greatest of these pagan philosophers.
