FYI - I do participate with my family, but it was highly frowned upon when I was a kid. In fact, I always found a high degree of hypocrisy in Halloween because while my IFB parents wouldn’t approve of us trick-or-treating, they had zero issue with spending their own money on a bunch of candy to hand out to the neighborhood kids who would come knocking at our door trick-or-treating. What a bunch of hypocritical crap! Can you tell I’m still bitter all these decades later?!? 😆

When I stopped doing T or T I was only 10 years old. My family had just become involved in an IFB church, and it was quite clear that, though they didn't approve of kids going, they weren't going to condemn anyone for doing so. Yet, they did try to influence decisions through deceptive means. I hated that. There was FAR too much hypocrisy in the church for me to really give a rip what they thought about anything I did. IFB hypocrisy on this and many other things has affected me in many different ways, and though in my 60s now, I still, AT TIMES, feel a bit of anger towards the pastor and his cronies for the crap they pulled and the attitudes they showed toward others who didn't agree with their pharisaical positions.

I should probably also add that both my parents grew up trick-or-treating back in the 50s and 60s. Of course they were raised as a Methodist and Southern Baptist, not IFB. It would be interesting to know the history of when certain church groups began shunning the practice of T-or-T. I’m willing to bet it was in the 1980s. I can even respect a family not allowing their children to participate for religious and/or safety reasons, but don’t turn around and then participate by passing out candy to the neighborhood kids!

when i was much younger it was already becoming too dangerous for kids to be out trick or treating... especially after dark..... but we did it anyway and just got back early.... i don;t rmember anyone being against halloween either in east los angeles or here in hawaii either one... ... but i do remember as time went on some of my friends lamenting the fact they were getting too big to enjoy it.... ...at 4 ft 10 i never reached that point.... i could still put on a costume even now.... grab a paper bag... and join the kids if i wanted to... and fit right in..... :sneaky:

but then growing up in waikiki as a teenager halloween every year was a blast.. ... each halloween for decades 2 whole main streets - kalakaua and kuhio were filled from one end to the other with people of all ages in costumes for one huge block party.... that actually covered multiple blocks.... we went there after trick or treating for a while... but then gradually dropped the quest for candy and just went into waikiki for the festivities.....

this will be the first year it returns without restrictions after the pandemic lockdowns... and as always we are planning to dress up and go there.... .. but in the most recent years we started getting back home well before midnight due to safety and the fact being out too long after dark is becoming dangerous even for adults.... ..they say there will be more police.. fire.. and ems presence this year than ever before... so we will see what happens... ... but i will definitely be there... and in costume.... . at least for a little while... 🎃

..update and edit..... this is the drawing and pattern i used for the midna twilight makeup.. yellow wig
red/orange contacts.... and a black hooded shift goes with it... nothing too crazy... but it does actually
keep people from recognizing me... i have walked past neighbors from my own building wearing all this

in waikiki and they had no idea who i was....

I wonder if the IFB churches that were/are anti Halloween are very geographically inclined. I could definitely see that. I can see the midwestern and southern churches pooping bricks about it and the churches in other regions being more relaxed.

I was raised in the midwest, and I've lived most of my life in the South, and I can tell you that the fundamentalist churches down South are some of the worst at misrepresenting this holiday and trying to force their members to accept a code of conduct set by the church...overriding anything done or said at home.

It's not really associated with Samhain anymore, just a fun time for kids to dress up and get candy. I think that dressing up as skeletons or ghosts is questionable, but of the Romans 14 kind.

my sister told me that in the years before they left texas... many baptist churches were having what they called harvest parties..... held at the church on halloween night... and intended to be a substitute for trick or treating and to get the minds of kids off all the ghoulish occultism surrounding halloween......... ... but she said the ironic and even hypocrtical thing about that was the church staff members would dress up in costume... and there would always be at least one dressed like the devil...... ???????

I used to get into all the Halloween stuff but lately I have lost interest in it. The yard decorations that graphically depict death and dismemberment are ugly and grotesque to me. The "cute" smiling ghosts are more tolerable but I always look forward to the first week of November when all those decorations (along with campaign signs)are taken down.

What All Saints Day has become is ridiculous! We stopped celebrating this years ago and started helping during the Harvest festivals at the churches we attended. We don't even truly like "Trunk or Treat" but will participate if that's what our church is doing.

People take down campaign signs in your area? Can you send someone to my area to teach people how to do that?

posted campaign signs are rare in hawaii ... you only see them on private residential property..... but even then not that often..... and they are banned on public property..... what you see most often here is the actual candidate standing beside a busy road wearing a lei and aloha shirts... smiling and waving at everyone who drives by... .... accompanied by a number of supporters... ..all holding campaigns and also waving.... flashing shaka signs... people driving by honking their horn if they support them... pretending not to notice them if they don;t... ... .. but then as soon as the campaign people leave all the signs go with them..... ..

billboards are also banned... which surprises a lot of visitors when they first realize they are not seeing any... .. but after they think about it they all agree the lack of billboard clutter is nice.... .. and i also have had them tell me they never see candidates themselves out in the open waving like they do here - anywhere else....

the death themes and goulish stuff definitely gets over done.... i don;t personally like it much either... . my favorite part of halloween is the pumpkins and the jack-o-lanterns...🎃. ......and given the right circumstances.. . they can be scary enough....😉..

Not a fan of the season, though I don't rail on it. If I participate in festivities this time of year I observe 1 Thes 5:22 ;)

One reason my wife and I stopped doing anything concerning Halloween back in 1998 was that our two foster sons said they wanted to be wizards like Harry Potter. They were going around trying to cast spells on people and got into trouble at school. Then a few days before Halloween, the youngest son stated that he was going to kill us with magic and put our blood on the steps of the house to warn people. Because of their disobedience and a few behavioral issues that week, we didn't allow them to go T or T'ing. We did allow them to give out candy, and then at the end of the night, they got the rest of the candy. It worked out well, and they behaved the rest of the time they were with us.

Fish is a better diet anyway.

Colossians 2:15 . Christ has spoiled the principalities and powers, making a show of them, openly. He exposed them ridicule.

The only reason Halloween can be fun is because the devil has been bound and his house spoiled. I like Matthew Henry's commentary on this verse:

He has obtained a glorious victory for us over the powers of darkness: And, having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it, v. 15. As the curse of the law was against us, so the power of Satan was against us. He treated with God as the Judge, and redeemed us out of the hands of his justice by a price; but out of the hands of Satan the executioner he redeemed us by power and with a high hand. He led captivity captive. The devil and all the powers of hell were conquered and disarmed by the dying Redeemer. The first promise pointed at this; the bruising of the heel of Christ in his sufferings was the breaking of the serpent's head, Gen. 3:15. The expressions are lofty and magnificent: let us turn aside and see this great sight. The Redeemer conquered by dying. See his crown of thorns turned into a crown of laurels. He spoiled them, broke the devil's power, and conquered and disabled him, and made a show of them openly-exposed them to public shame, and made a show of them to angels and men. Never had the devil's kingdom such a mortal blow given to it as was given by the Lord Jesus. He tied them to his chariot-wheels, and rode forth conquering and to conquer-alluding to the custom of a general's triumph, who returned victorious.-Triumphing over them in it; that is, either in his cross and by his death; or, as some read it, in himself, by his own power; for he trod the wine-press alone, and of the people there was none with him.

The only reason Halloween can be fun is because the devil has been bound and his house spoiled.
Are you a guy who is concerned about the ill effects of Halloween on little Christian children? Just asking’….

No. I think little Christian children are the safest ones on Halloween.
