A sign of what? I was just curious because that seems to be a topic that people pick one side or the other, not much of a middle ground.
They were a sign to the early church that God had poured His Spirit out upon all flesh.
Do you think God still does this today through people speaking in tongues?
Not typically, no. And even in the days of the Apostles, it was not universal. I tend to believe the stories of missionaries who were in extreme and dire circumstances, where 'Satan has a throne', so to speak, who tell of such things, though.

Gary Demar's take on the possibility of a literal Chinese invasion of Israel featuring 200,000,000 soldiers, all of them mounted on horses:
"It’s being argued that the dried-up Euphrates is the marching route of a 200-million-man army from China on horseback (Rev. 9:13-21). The drying up of the Euphrates takes place after 'the stars fell from heaven to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs … [a]nd the sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places' (Rev. 6:13-14).
