My Memories of and Musings on HAC / FBCH

Really... IFBs celebrating the devil's holiday 🤔
As strict as HAC was about every facet of life, it seems really strange that they’d even acknowledge Halloween, much less go all out for it. How hypocritical.

Justice I worked the youth center with Pam in sunday school. I wonder if our paths have crossed. My husband guarded both Bro Hyles and dh with our K-9 . We were in dh Sunday school class until our work schedules made it impossible to attend. Thats when alot of things were being said about his involvement with other couples wives. I'll stop here because all of this has been discussed here.

Calvary Chapel folk are dead set against Halloween. I've heard some pastors and radio personalities rail against it.

Myself, I used to get into it but over the years, I've completely lost all taste for it (except when it comes to the mini KitKat bars). No preaching or teaching caused me to change my mind on it... I just lost interest in it.

Can you explain this a little more in depth? Do you mean your husband was on the college campus and church security team, or do you mean Pastor Hyles had actual bodyguard folks surrounding him like secret service?

I believe they might have heard a short sermon on hell after the haunted house, and, of course, several made a profession of faith. I just googled "hell house" because I thought it was a trend in evangelical churches for a while. There's even a documentary about it.

I wasn't part of the youth group though. Had a friend that was, so I remember when she told me there were live snakes....something I've always been afraid of. Sounded pretty crazy to me, but I figured teenagers loved that stuff.

My husband was on security team with Clyde Wolfe . Yes if you look through the yearbook in 1976-1983 he guarded Bro Hyles and dh

That makes sense. The celebration of Halloween seemed a bit off.

Seems kind of strange that the president of a little Christian college would feel the need to have body guards with K9 guard dogs surrounding him. Really strange.

Bro Hyles traveled around the country and preached hard against alot of things. Listen to some of his tapes. His pulpit was bullet proof. The only things I remember was upset members would drive through his yard.

Sounds like a guy who thought very highly of himself and fancied himself as a celebrity, but I’m guessing if he walked down the streets of any Main Street America, no one would pick him out of the crowd.

Of course! I knew Danny, but I'm not sure if you and I ever met. I really liked Danny. I believe I met him my freshman year. Super guy!

You would have to have been there in the seventies. Bro. Hyles told a lot of stories about how his life was threatened because he and the church were the last hope to save America from communists and the godless spirits of the world. I remember one story in particular that he told he was praying by Lake Michigan and a sniper fired a rifle shot at him. It was unusual times for a teen like me.

I'm trying to be generous in my words, but I highly doubt those stories today.

Jo is correct, it was an event to get teenagers to come out and then have a preaching service at the end. Unlike some haunted houses I've seen, I'm pretty certain that it was only for one night. Btw, Jo, the snakes were behind glass!

I don’t believe him. Gunshots around Chicago are an everyday occurrence with the gang activity in the city. It’s also possible to hear gunshots during duck season on that lake. I highly doubt anyone was looking to take out a little IFB college president.

I remember the guys who tried to imitate Jack Hyles' cough and then the whole Binaca thing. (eye roll)

I do, too. It's a long story that I can't write, but I knew one guy in particular who swore his cough was real and not an imitation of Bro. Hyles. He was actually quite comical in his own way. The dude really felt his "anointing."

He's a guy with a common name that I have tried unsuccessfully to locate over the past couple of decades, but I would like to have lunch with him if I could!

Do you mean to tell us that young, but grown college-aged men were being spanked by faculty at HAC?? And these guys were PAYING tuition to attend this school?? I don’t care if it was fifty years ago, it was the 1970s, not the 1870s for crying out loud! OMG. I think I discovered a college worse than what I thought Bob Jones University would be.
Ha! Better than that.....at Hammond Baptist....the principal was spanking teen girls....in his office, alone. He threatened to "paddle" me and I dared him to....he backed off REALLY QUICKLY. This was in the late 70's.
