Are Conservatives Adopting Cancel Culture

Something is definitely off:

“Sinclair’s ABC stations to Air Special in Remembrance of Charlie Kirk During Jimmy Kimmel Live! Friday Timeslot Sinclair’s ABC stations will air a special in remembrance of Charlie Kirk this Friday, during the Jimmy Kimmel Live! timeslot. The special will also air across all Sinclair stations this weekend. In addition, Sinclair is offering the special to all ABC affiliates across the country.”

Like I have heard several times:
The same people who are upset at losing their jobs b/c of free speech were exuberant or at least ok with someone losing their life b/c of free speech.

I’m not crazy about cancel culture no matter which side uses it.

I’m all for being canceled by public outrage or peer outrage but am totally against being canceled by government outrage.

So ABC has indefinitely pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! after Kimmel basically stated that the Kirk shooter was a Trump supporter.

It appears that maybe the FCC chair may have said something threatening about his remarks. If that's the case, it smacks of government restraint of political speech and may well be unconstitutional.

Mitigating factors: First, if Kimmel gave false information about a crime, that may put ABC in violation of the terms of their broadcast licence. Second, it was some local affiliates that first announced they were going to stop broadcasting Kimmel, so maybe ABC was bending to their pressure. Third, ABC/Disney sacked Roseanne Barr and Gina Carano for far less, so it'd hypocritical to be whining about Kimmel getting cancelled now.

Still, between this and Bondi's remarks, this is getting too close to government overreach on first amendment matters, if it hasn't already crossed that line. I think a constitutional challenge is inevitable.

In other news, Antifa is a terrorist organization now. It's about time; apparently, firebombing government buildings wasn't enough to earn them that designation.

I’ve been thinking more about freedom of press than free speech, though both might be applicable: https://www.politico.com/news/magaz...upreme-court-first-amendment-lawsuit-00570697

Here's a good one, too, from a few weeks ago:

ABC & NBC FAKE NEWS, two of the worst and most biased networks in history, give me 97% BAD STORIES. IF THAT IS THE CASE, THEY ARE SIMPLY AN ARM OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY AND SHOULD, ACCORDING TO MANY, HAVE THEIR LICENSES REVOKED BY THE FCC.

Yeah... no, that's not how the first amendment works. You don't get to revoke licences because they aren't flattering you.

While I agree with you that there is some concern over potential censorship issues from the right, I think it's ultra ironic that the same people who were declaring how great their voices was in canceling other people for not towing the line to their leftist agenda, now they are squealing like stuck pigs when the pendulum swings back against them. Hypocrites!

'Zactly. I want to look at all these crying lefties and say, "How's it feel!?"

You’re old enough to know that politics is a pendulum, and there’s a 100% guarantee that it will swing the other way in the near future. Just sayin’

I'm tempted to post a Tom Petty song of the same name, but due to thematic material, will refrain at the moment. 😁

Again, you're probably right, but this is a political battle where it might be a good thing with the left to see that there's going to be pushback and repercussions to their own tactics.
