Donald Trump 'orders US army chiefs to draw up plan to invade Greenland'

"Finland's Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen declared Tuesday that military action against Greenland would trigger devastating consequences for Washington's strategic position worldwide, as tensions escalate over President Donald Trump's territorial ambitions.

"In remarks to Ilta-Sanomat, Hakkanen emphasized that America's economic and political dominance rests entirely on alliance networks built through decades of political trust—a foundation that could crumble with a single misstep.

"'All allies in Asia, Europe and the Middle East are watching extremely closely how allies are treated in different parts of the world. If something unusual were done to any allied country within any network, it would have serious ripple effects on the United States' overwhelming advantage over China. China does not have a similarly reliable global alliance network like the United States does,' Hakkanen stated."

Would that justify invading another sovereign country because it benefits our national security?
Apparently there are some people who find that a reasonable position. FTR I am not one of them.

Somebody please explain how the takeover of Greenland by the United States is necessary, or even in any way helpful, to our national security. What is going on, in or around Greenland, that is a threat to us?

"Mr Trump has repeatedly insisted that the US must “own” Greenland, citing security reasons. On Friday, he said Moscow or Beijing will seize the island if he does not, insisting that 'we’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbour'.

"He has repeatedly said, without evidence, that Russian and Chinese vessels operate near the island, which Denmark disputes.

“'The image that’s ‍being painted of Russian and Chinese ships right inside the Nuuk fjord and massive Chinese investments being made is not correct,' said Lars Lokke Rasmussen, the Danish foreign minister, earlier this week.

"Recent vessel tracking data from MarineTraffic and LSEG showed no Chinese or Russian ship presence near Greenland.

"Two senior Nordic diplomats, with access to Nato intelligence, told the Financial Times that there had been no signs of submarine activity in Greenland’s waters by Moscow or Beijing in recent years. Another Nordic diplomat said such activity was confined to the Russian side of the Arctic."

We already have military bases in Greenland, and Denmark is willing to fully cooperate with us if we wish to expand our military presence there. The current situation in no way justifies an invasion of our long-time NATO ally and violation of the NATO treaty.

So we now turn to the ancient philosophers and ask, does the end justify the means?

And, again, we got right back to my original question….
I'm not trying to justify anything. Im just saying his motives aren't as black as being painted in the article being quoted.

But around here, Trump's unconstitutional acts of war seem only unquestionable when perpetrated against Iran.

Why do you think that is?

sovereign country?........ greenlands "sovereign" is king frederik x of denmark...... which makes them a colony of a european power - a monarchy..... .. and this desire by various u.s. administrations to gain control of greenland is nothing new.. . it has been going on for over 100 years..... long before russian and chinese warships began making a regular habit of prowling around.... and regardless of the propaganda coming out of denmark and other european countries.. (posted by msn and other left wing sources..).... this really is happening...

and our own national security is actually the only justifiable reason for invading another country........ .the u.s. took hawaii in the last half of the 19th century when it looked like the hawaiian monarchy - through foolish actions - might incite a war between itself and germany - which would have put hawaii in german hands long before japan ever became a world power.... ... and even if that had not happened and the united states not taken hawaii - then it would have been taken over by japan long before 1941..... and the united states would have probably lost world war 2.....

and in fact - during world war 2 .... in1941.... the u.s forceably took control of greenland to prevent nazi and japanese forces from gaining a foothold there....... we could have stayed after the war but since everybody was having coniptions over russia keeping all territory they took during ww2 - including half of germany - and in order to keep our image of mr nice guy 😇- we left greenland to itself.... and to it;s european owner and ruler - denmark.....

by the way.... russian and chinese warships prowl around on a regular basis just outside the american defensive zone surrounding hawaii too.... . here where i live....... and even though they are well over the horizon and seldom visible from land - they carry weapons that could hit us within seconds..without warning... if they chose to attack..

try that on for size where you live..... it might change your opinion of what our government should do regarding our national security.... :sneaky:

Cuba’s been in the back pocket of Russia/Soviet Union for decades. The Cuban Missile Crisis is a good example. 90 miles.1768258352795.jpeg

You’re right. It’s not technically a sovereign nation. It’s called a “self-governing, autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.” Still, it’s considered a member of NATO and they’ve been unequivocally clear they wish to stay as they are.

which is why we should never leave guantanamo....
We’ve been there since 1903. I see no reason to leave, although with the advancements and technology of today, we could probably accomplish as much on one of the nearby Florida keys.
