Why so much national interest in this story (though admittedly very tragic)?

Admittedly, I am missing a lot of information but the handling of this case is puzzling. Namely, why is the NAACP and Colin (I'm a victim of white privilege) Kaepernick involved? Was there a run in with law enforcement prior to the demise of this kid? Why two autopsies? Is there no recorded statements from the friends he went on this excursion with? I would think questions about law enforcement involvement and interrogation of companions would factor more prominently in this tragic story.
 
Interesting story. It feels like a case of guy who went boating with friends and met with an "unfortunate accident." Which somehow wouldn't surprise me.

On the other hand:

The family’s attorney, Ben Crump​

makes me instantly skeptical. Crump is a racial-grievance ambulance chaser.

My first thoughts were why the instant race-baiting? There’s no evidence whatsoever of a racial component other than Wells being black and hanging out with his white friends. Maybe the suspicion is warranted because it happened around Mississippi?😜
