Let's talk about the word "standards"

It was a firm statement because a musician said it was. Therefore everyone else with long hair or a beard or wire rimmed glasses or... well they agreed with said musician by wearing the style of the day, thereby confirming their guilt by association.
For whatever it’s worth, speaking anecdotally, both my wife and mother have vestiges of expectations that they ought to wear a dress to church. Neither grew up IFB, nor gleaned it from their time in an IFB church. It’s related to cultural norms of that era more than any explicit doctrinal teaching.

How are you defining the word “cult”?
Us verses them
Don’t question authority
Control
Cannot challenge the pastor
Using fear to control
Black and white thinking about issues that are not in scripture
Discouraged to have close relationships with people outside of the church

I know, I know, your church doesn’t operate this way. My wife’s side of the family are all still IFB. And they all say that their church doesn’t operate like this. But sit and talk to them for 2-3 hours and they actually operate this way.

Absolutely. At one time men wore hats. Styles change. Things change.

The idea that everyone who wore this article of clothing or combed their hair one way or another was proof of anything about the individual is silly in itself. What it does show is that Christians aren't immune from "looking on the outward appearance" which is not a godly attitude.

You are using gross generalizations to apply to a large group of people that you have no way of knowing whether it’s true. It would be like me saying that all creoles and Cajuns are inbred rural swamp-dwellers who hunt alligators and speak unintelligible English because I saw one on TV once.

I am not arguing for making wholesale indictments against people based upon subjective evaluations, but to deny that culture is a measuring stick for general truths is also shortsighted.

Some of that may be true 😂

We’ve literally gone to 5 count them 5 different IFB churches and literally all 5 operate this way. Is it literally every IFB church in America? I don’t know there has never been a case study.

True story. Couple years back we went to visit friends that live in Indiana. We knew them in our IFB days. (This was after we left the IFB) they asked if we’d go to church with them and we said, absolutely. (This makes me laugh out loud every time) we go to Sunday school 😂 and dontcha know it’s about dress standards 😂

We love these people we really do. But my wife and I said, isn’t it funny they all say, yeah we know there are IFB churches like that but ours isn’t 😂

I got another one 😂 I’m serious true story. On my wife’s side we have a nephew that moved out of state and he invited us to visit. And of course the night before he said, we know there are IFB churches like that but not ours. This was a random Wednesday night. Yep, it was about always having questions 😂

These were random services. Yeah yeah I know yours isn’t like this.

I have a few more examples if you need.

Have you ever heard the story about the women who wonder why they always pick losers who beat them for men?

Just sayin’. 😉

How many IFB churches does a guy gotta go to to find one that’s not a cult?

For those not familiar with Dr. John Hamblin, see the reviews of his preaching on this page:

"Then he went on to state that if you don’t carry a tract in your pocket that you must not be a true Christian. Where in the Bible is this ever stated?! A piece of paper doesn’t affirm my salvation. A piece of paper separates you from me?! I don’t think so. But, man, did Dr. Hamblin knock this point home. Even to the point that the ushers have to have a tract in their pocket to collect his money."

"Then Dr. Hamblin got that dig in. The one about how girls shouldn’t be wearing pants. . . . I asked about the pants reference in the car on the way home. The explanation that I received was that the IFB churches believe that if a woman wears pants that she is trying to be a man."

"After we sit he rants about the KJV being the inspired, preserved words of God, and we should hear about the incarnation and resurrection more than just twice a year."

"We then get a story about a preacher who was loved by his people but it seemed his preaching was devoid of message (he probably graduated from the same fine institution as Hamblin because all his yelling is devoid of a message)."

"Truths Hamblin gives to the young pastors . . . Never monkey with the King James Bible and don’t let others mess with it either."

Sounds about right. We've talked about Hamblin a lot here over the years. He's a goof. And for some reason he always looks like he's trying to keep his dentures from falling out.

If you keep picking those actively affiliated with the Hyles style of authoritarianism your chances are high that you’ll see at least some of that stuff. Good thing not all IFBs are cut from that mold.

If you say so.

Here’s the thing, I know this is the FFF but how many on here were IFB and are not any longer? You can’t expect families to move states to find a “good” IFB” church. I know that youre not saying to jump states but the point is……..try and find one in your area 😂 probably not gonna happen.

Something simple, what is the percentage of IFB churches that require women to wear a dress to teach Sunday school?

Probably impossible to find out but it ain’t 2%. My guess is that it’s over 75%if not 95 or 98%

I was raised IFB
--Church
--Bible College
--Seminary
--YouthPastor in an IFB church
--Assistant Pastor in an IFB church
--Associate Pastor in an IFB church
--Assisted with planting a couple of IFB churches

We hit the road in a RV 15 years ago. Visited gospel preaching churches and only found 5 that preached the Word: Evangelical Free in Gaylord MI, Presbyterian in Brighton MI, Evangelical Free in Pensacola, Southern Baptist in Gulf Shores and now NonDenominational (Baptists 😝) in Robertsdale, Alabama

We tried a new church every week as we traveled throughout the midwest from Canada to the Gulf... pastors are starving their congregations.

While I firmly believe the original tenants of Fundamentalism... I am not in association with any today.

I know of MANY IFB churches that ARE NOT a cult, though like you I have attended many that were. So, once again, "Bruh", let's throw the baby out with the bathwater.... UGH,!!!

“I know of MANY IFB churches that ARE NOT a cult,”

In my opinion you can spot a cult if they require women to wear a dress to teach Sunday school.

So, do these churches that you claim not to be a cult require this?

Having STANDARDS for such positions doesn't make them a cult. You've got one twisted, WARPED set of values and opinions. You say they go to one extreme, yet YOU go to the other and don't see yourself as a cult member? UGH!!!
