Christa Pike botched execution.

Whatever happened to cyanide capsules? General Erwin "Desert Fox" Rommel used one to commit suicide in 1944, likewise Heinrich Himmler and Hermann Goering after World War 2 ended. It is my understanding that they caused almost instant death. How about the suicide pill that airman Francis Gary Powers was carrying when his U-2 spy plane was shot down over Russia in 1960? (He survived and didn't use it - I don't have any problem with that, he was a great American hero and deserved to keep on living). Maybe someone can put the Tennessee prison officials in touch with experts who are familiar with this technology.

In Canada, the world leader in assisted suicide, they use pentobarbitol, which is what they used in Tennessee, too. Maybe they didn't get the dosage right.

Dosage is determined by body weight. Seems a little risky to me. I'd rather be shot down like Billy the Kid.

"Along with South Carolina, Idaho, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Utah authorize the firing squad as a method of execution."

Use of firing squads for executions in Utah and Idaho may reflect the influence in those states of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Morons) who believe in "blood atonement" - in order for one's sins to be forgiven, his or her blood must be shed.

Tennessee statute may perhaps be interpreted to allow for a firing squad: "If both lethal injection and electrocution is held to be unconstitutional, then 'any constitutional method of execution” will be used. (Tenn. Code Ann. § 40 – 23-114)'"

Execution by firing squad is constitutional - the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in its favor in 1878, and the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled likewise in 2024.
