Pentagon reveals firing squad execution of Fort Hood terrorist will be livestreamed

I’m not anti-capital punishment. I am not a big fan of it except in rare, egregious circumstances, but I believe this guy qualifies. My argument is against the public broadcast of the execution.

Now, the capital punishment debate should be fleshed out. If one is going to really follow the teachings of Scripture, then the outcome would have be what Ransom said in his response. I would not agree with him on that, but at least it’s authentic and consistent.

I’m not a fan of broadcasting the execution but it’s based totally on my gut feeling.

I believe capital punishment should be an option and the sentence shouldn’t be years in being carried out.

Though I don't have an issue with capitol punishment in and of itself, I do have to concede that it is an extremely messy proposition in the hands of sinful people. It's an extreme responsibility to anyone carrying it out. Can't say I'd want such a responsibility in my hands.

On the other hand, I can't justify rewarding a murderer with room, board and free healthcare for life.

How about a lifetime of busting rocks on the chain gang seven days a week?

They’re not deterring anything. Putting it on tv makes him a martyr to his people even more. Also, he died in the name of his God. And probably would gladly do it again. You know this, religion is very powerful.
Do you think it could be a deterrent for Jihadist radicals?

I’m trying to understand your logic when it comes to this topic because you used the Old Testament as your original source.

I’m assuming you’re indicating you wouldn’t support execution for those more petty type offenses (based on today’s definition) because our laws don’t call for the death penalty of such offenses, but for the crime of murder, execution is allowable in some states (at least mine). But based on this logic, is it fair to say that if the US reinstates capital punishment for homosexuality, would you support it? There’s historical precedence of this practice in colonial America: https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/policy...lization-of-homosexuality-in-american-history
I thought that we were in agreement that the death penalty is authorized by scripture (old and new)? I thought you were only beef was with it being publicized?

You don’t want to answer my question. That’s ok.
You didn’t ask any questions in the last post. Which question are you referring to? This ….

“Are you referring to capital punishment or the public viewing of the execution?”

I have no problem answering questions. You just dodged my question though. Do you believe that the death penalty is authorized by scripture, both old and new testament?

And to answer your question, yes, I do believe the Bible authorizes capital punishment.

HAHA! You know as well as I do, if the department of corrections were to implement something like this, it would be decried as cruel and unusual punishment.

If this is what life behind bars looked like, I wouldn't have any problems with abolishing the death penalty.

Those truly radicalized would probably be emboldened by seeing one of their own executed.
lol, I am so technologically challenged and such a really poor multitasker. That should have read “Do you think it could be a deterrent for others besides Jihadist radicals?

And to answer your question, yes, I do believe the Bible authorizes capital punishment.
Okay, then it seems reasonable that OT public executions and their very public nature would generally serve as a deterrent to those who would behave similarly.

So far as your question about homosexuality and the basis for using the Bible to justify executing them, I would make the argument that the old covenant and all its inherent structure was for a specific people and time which now has been done away with, as we are not a theocracy. Abcaines (and FSSL) aptly alluded to this earlier by showing the death penalty as being relevant (to the imago dei) outside of the confines of the OT covenant people.
