    Mrs. Hyles and the kids

Becky Hyles Smith, the oldest of Jack Hyles' four children, died yesterday. It was one month to the day after her husband, Tim Smith, died. They were living in Oklahoma, where she had developed dementia. She was 74. https://www.wattsfuneralhome.com/obituaries/becky-smith

    Mrs. Hyles and the kids

That is true Sherry. I'm not sure that I understand God's "justice" today, but I believe that He is just.

Blue Denim & Lace Dedication page

I don't know, but a bunch of us did it. Somewhere in my archives, I have a Scofield Bible signed by Jack Hyles, Lee Roberson, Jerry Falwell, Curtis Hutson and a few others.

I'm not sure of the child's birthdate, but she did, in fact, bear a child by the name of Jack. I'll be honest, I didn't think much of it at the time, but today it seems bizarre. The Mitchells also had a son that they named Jack. According to their website, he is currently the Executive Vice...

I've never seen this. It may be that Jennie Nischick was the first person to make him believe that his "philosophies" were marketable. And that is all that is contained in that book if my memory serves me correctly. Given the events that were to come afterward, it is interesting.

    Mrs. Hyles and the kids

I'll probably get criticized for this, because I concede that some of what I am about to write is conjecture or second hand information. But it is my understanding that the Hyles Publication assets did comprise a large portion of what Jack Hyles left behind in death. I believe some legal issues...

    Mrs. Hyles and the kids

I think the way people make up their minds to leave a congregation is most often a progression of issues that finally inform the member that he/she is in the wrong congregation. Perhaps if it were only one doctrinal issue, someone might request a meeting with the pastor or other church leader...

Somebody tell me, how does this happen??

It's really interesting how these threads can morph into all sorts of discussions. This one, in which I wondered aloud how I could have gotten on a mailing list after having been gone for so long... :)

    Mrs. Hyles and the kids

Sherry, she has told how she worked as nurses' aid in NC while living there. Nurse's aids do not earn a lot. She has spoken of how she was nearly destitute in those days. I would think if Beverly had $ to share with Cindy, she should/would have. Cindy and her husband now live a very modest life...

    Mrs. Hyles and the kids

So much has happened since Raider first posted this. I thought I might make a feeble response. Jack Hyles told one of my very best friends about eight years before he died that he was leaving Mrs. Hyles ten million dollars. My friend and I now believe that was a lie. Twenty-five years after his...

    Do Movements Die?

I think so and frankly, I think the independent Baptists (as many of us knew them fifty years ago) are dying on the vine. They will probably never COMPLETELY die off, but much like other Baptist sects (e.g., primitive Baptists) they will become something of an anomaly to most. There is nothing...

    Jerry Falwell

Likely the most consequential figure ever from among the independent Baptists.

Somebody tell me, how does this happen??

That is a distinct possibility! Which raises a question of whether that school has ever disassociated itself from anyone that it conferred a past academic (or honorary) award? I can think of some candidates!

Somebody tell me, how does this happen??

I reckon. But after subsequent moves, it's still rather remarkable to me.

Somebody tell me, how does this happen??

Maybe it's like someone being a fan of a certain sports team, in which they never played for, never had a relative play for, never earned a dollar from, and yet, they wear the team's clothes and put their logos on all sorts of personal items for the rest of their lives. Maybe it's sad that...

Somebody tell me, how does this happen??

Dude, I graduated from HAC in 1981. I've been accused of a lot since then and some of it was even true. But I haven't been accused of being youthful in a very long time!!

Somebody tell me, how does this happen??

On Saturday I checked my mailbox and found the attached promotional flyer. According to Google, my mailbox is situated 640 miles from Hyles Anderson College, where I graduated in 1981. I have only visited the campus one time since then, 25 years ago. I have had no communication with anyone from...

    Mrs. Hyles and the kids

Terry Smith is dead. The only reason I know this is that his younger brother, Tim, who was married to the oldest Hyles child (Becky) died a couple of weeks ago. I read it in the obituary. https://www.wattsfuneralhome.com/obituaries/timothy-smith

    Deaths Of HAC Students

I've never heard of Jim Ross, but I do recall Bob Ross from early HAC years. Are they related?

    Things Change

I remember my first day as a Hyles Anderson College student. I drove myself from Alabama to enroll on the Tuesday after Labor Day in 1976. I was excited. It was my first foray into a world that would not include my parents and the home in which I had been raised. I would never return to that...
