Our 1st grandchild is going to VBS. We attend a very solid, gospe-oriented (theologically sound) church... YET, there is a bit of fear, here.

Will the children's workers implore the gospel with sayings like...

"Ask Jesus in your heart."
"Say this prayer."

I remember our IFB pastor telling us in church, "I could go down to the junior church in the basement right now and get everyone of those children to make a profession of faith in Christ. And that ought to scare you."

That could very well happen…but I was exposed to such as a kid and the sovereignty of God still captured me with His grace.

I just realized that my post made me sound like a pious reformed Baptist!!

😂 or, just a realization that God's saving grace overcomes human errors.

If he is chosen, he will be drawn inspite of humanity.

I just hate the thought that he may have to struggle with poor theology as many of my friends have.

If the worst thing I ever have to worry about is a VBS volunteer worker talking to my kid about asking Jesus in her heart…what a blessed man I’ll be.

At your church I would be more concerned with hearing "Young man, sit down! When God pleases to convert the heathen, he will do it without your aid or mine!”

😁

What's Bible school about?

Well... He will! 😝

I heard "ask Jesus into your heart" countless times as a kid at Bible camp. As an adult with more matured theology, it never occurred to me until relatively recently that the phrase was theologically problematic. (Probably from reading threads on the topic on the original FFF, for what that's worth.) And it didn't make me question the faith or sincerity of the camp's administrators or counselors. I understood as a child what was meant, and as a somewhat latitudinarian adult, I just let it slide.

It makes for an interesting (and probably important) theological discussion, there are worse threats out there to the faith to worry about.

Why not volunteer your time and keep an eye on those rascals!?;)

I remember all of those lines....When I was in VBS as a child in the late 60's and early 70's, those lines were pushed on my sisters and brothers and me...Of course we wanted to go to heaven...who would want to go to hell? There was no truth given about why we were going to hell, no explanation of what salvation really meant. So, for many years many of us in the childrens and youth groups were unsure of our salvation....the "pray after me" was standard fodder on the bus routes and childrens churches...For many years many of us struggled and feared going to hell, and were too frightened and ashamed to ask about salvation, as it was pretty much taboo to doubt....UGH! I don't even want to think about those days again!

I have a few friends who got saved in college (BJU and Maranatha) because they finally heard the gospel without the kitschy sayings.

I saw this a number of times at Lancaster Baptist/West Coast Baptist College - I even watched a particular staff member profess Christ and get baptized!

Well, anyway. They're not your children, they're Christ's. After all you can do, you just have to trust Him.

You strike me as a bit of legalist, and I don't mean that as a deprecation. I've been there.

But I think you have more important things to worry about than the precise wording they're going to hear, like how you're going to react when they begin to ask questions about baptism.
