kevin hicks of the history squad did a really good video on the battle of agincourt and the part henry v played in rallying his troops..... ... it;s in the thread i created about traditonal archery in the sports lounge forum.... ...there are some things henry is known to have said... and specific ways the archers and troops were known to have responded.... .... he is known for certain to have shouted "saint george!" at the beginning of his speech... which was echoed in unison by the troops.... .. and he is also known to have told his troops that if they were caught and taken alive by the french - the french would cut off their fingers so they could never shoot a bow or ride a horse again....... .. . but much of the rest was lost to the fog of war and history... .. shakespeare definitely took artistic license in his play writing - and it;s a good speech... .... but personally after i learned the true history i found the real story more compelling... even though big parts of it were missing.........The same. Although that famous St. Crispin's Day "band of brothers" speech is fictitious. Henry did give a speech before the battle, of which no firm record remains. Basically, he encouraged his men to confess their sins and trust that God was on their side, and to be courageous, because their cause was legitimate. Nothing too unusual for the occasion. Shakespeare was the real orator, obviously.
still... in all that reading and watching video on the subject - i had no idea king henry v was also a tennis player.... .. there has to be some way i can work that information into my teaching of archery lessons.... ... gotta think about that and figure it out....
