I would closely consider Reason #2 - "Some pastors fear losing power. . . . They hesitate to train men for ministry because they fear that younger men may outshine them . . . Then, pastors wonder why people with talent and potential leave. They ask where the youth have gone. And they complain that they have no one to take their place over their elderly congregation when they retire."

[In the typical leadership model of authoritarian churches, there may be only one pastor/elder, in contrast with the New Testament churches which had multiple pastors/elders. Even if there are assistant pastors in modern-day churches, they may be trusted flunkies and yes-men who will go along with whatever the senior pastor says. Lay people with leadership potential in such churches will be regarded by the senior pastor as a threat, and they will do whatever is necessary to run them off. Loyal congregations will not complain or ask questions about it when their most prominent and talented fellow members mysteriously disappear, or perhaps are publicly demonized and cast into outer darkness - everyone will assume that the departed member must have committed some serious offense and they had it coming to them].
