........

I am old enough to have the arm scar that was the ticket into kindergarten. I am old enough to remember standing in line at school to get booster shots. I am old enough to remember the adult friends in the family who had withered limbs from polio. I am old enough to know that these folks have missed the point entirely regarding vaccination.

Wasn't that for polio or smallpox or something?  Everyone I know has that scar.  I don't have it, but I know I got the shots.

That was for small pox...called a "pox mark"

I remember standing in line at school for all my shots! I dont remember anyone choosing not to get them.

The small pox vaccine was one of the greatest gifts God has ever given to mankind. Millions of lives saved each year and much misery avoided. There were over 300 million small pox deaths during the 20th century.

We are spoiled by the success of vaccines. So many don't remember the fear, misery, and death of life pre-vaccines.

Pertussis, or whooping cough, has also made a comeback in California because of vaccine refusal. Adults who are around babies should get a booster shot to protect those too young to vaccinate (I just got one this year for that reason). Whooping cough can seem like a bad cold to an adult, but can kill an infant.

Smallpox. Relatively few people under 40 would have that scar, as smallpox was deemed eradicated in the 1980s.

I have a scar that I think is from the vaccine, but compared to most people's, it's hardly there. I imagine some people heal better than others, or the blisters that formed from the vaccine weren't as large. Then again, I'm also overweight, so it might just be stretched out a bit.

I'm several years past 40, so I can see where younger folks don't have the scar.  As an aside, I do remember reading about the possibility that smallpox might be used as a biological weapon because it is considered eradicated and the vaccine is not given anymore.  And it's not uncommon knowledge that our government still retains samples of smallpox in government high-containment labs.

But back to your point.  I happened to notice recently that my scar has completely disappeared.  And that seemed amazing to me, because mine was quite large.  Probably as tall as a quarter, but oval in shape, so not as wide.  In my childhood, when I was quite self-conscious, I was painfully aware that my scar was more than twice as large as most of my friends'.  It embarrassed me back then.  So the memory is quite clear in my mind.  Anyway, I've been slender my whole life, so I don't think you can attribute the lack of a scar on your weight.  I think of mine as God's healing touch.  Even though I hadn't thought about it in decades, God chose to heal it.  Praise God!

I also seem to recall that the polio vaccine was a purple liquid administered on a sugar cube.  Does anyone else have this memory?  The only thing I remember being administered at school was the TB tine test...a round piece of plastic with a bunch of small needles pressed into the inner arm.  But I'm a military brat, so maybe things were done differently in the schools I attended.

I don't ever remember having the pox mark.  I even remember as a kid comparing arms and looking for mine to no avail.

That's the oral vaccine that was developed by Albert Sabin and others a few years after Jonas Salk. It was a major improvement over the Salk vaccine because it was easier to administer, and the way it worked made it more effective in eradicating polio.

So far as I remember, I never got the oral vaccine. Here in Ontario, polio vaccine is part of a combined injection, and I think I received something similar back in the 70s or 80s.

I may have had that one once or twice, but I think the one done at my school was the Mantoux test, which is done with a more conventional syringe.

I got both the shot and the sugar cube.  I don't know why.  I think they just gave the sugar cube to all the kids by default.  They did it at my school.

because of the homeless ministry i;m part of i am frequently around people with tuberculosis..... so i get the mantoux tb test every 6 months..... but my dad is required by his employer to be tested every six months too so i just go with him when he goes......

my dad use to play jokes on firefighter and paramedic recruits.... he would tell them that obsessive grooming was a recipe for disaster and that they should never trim their nose hairs..... he would say it;s because nose hair was their first natural line of defense against tuberculosis...... he would also add that it was important to breathe through their nose whenever in close proximity to a respiratory patient who might have tb...... then he would tell them stories of people who wanted to look good for a hot date... trimmed their nose hair... and the next they knew they were testing positive for tb exposure..........

You do bring up a great point that's hard to argue against vaccinations being that most professionals in the medical and emergency services not only get vaccinations but are required to.

Have there been studies about vaccinations in the military?  I know the ones who travel overseas are required to get unusual ones.  My husband was shipping out during the Gulf War and the gubmint could not find his shot records and would not accept the personal copy he had.  He had to get almost every vaccine in existence.  Then they sent him to Norway.  Gotta love the military.

All the military talk makes me wonder how many autistic vets are running around out there.  :-\

Well, they do all wear the same thing every day and have a very strictly regimented routine. ;)

Excerpt:

"People who have not received the measles-mumps-rubella, or MMR, vaccine are susceptible to contracting the highly contagious illness and should avoid Disney "for the time being," state epidemiologist Gil Chavez said.
The same holds true for crowded places with a high concentration of international travelers, such as airports, Chavez said. People who are vaccinated don't need to take such precautions, he said.

Disneyland Resorts spokeswoman Suzi Brown said officials agreed with the advice that "it's absolutely safe to visit if you're vaccinated."

The people who have been infected range in age from 7 months to 70 years old. The vast majority had not been vaccinated, and a quarter had to be hospitalized."

Some of you who were never around the Hyles camp of ifbdom do not really seem to understand the mentality that was present and that was fostered. I mean the 'don't call in crawl in' mentality.
It was fairly common to sit in the church service on Sunday mornings and have them announce a baby born during the week and sure enough they would mention the name and announce that they were there in church and baby was in the  nursery. I believe the quickest I hear of was someone having a baby on a Thursday and being in church with the baby 'in their place' on Sunday. Always told my wife that there would eventually be someone wanting to make the hit parade that would give birth on Saturday and be there Sunday. Never happened to my knowledge but I guarantee you there are people there who would have done it to get the accolades of 'the mog'.

But, but, but, the creme-de-la-creme is when you were pregnant carrying a baby and found out before the weekend that the baby was dead and you still went on your bus route and taught Sunday School and waited until Monday to give birth. This happened once for sure during my sojourn there but jh had told a story in preaching a few times about someone else who had done that so I am sure there were others in the wings who would have done the same. Even Dr. Pol says you have to get a dead calf out of a cow asap because the toxins produced are dangerous for the cow and could kill her. But, a person at fbch; Well, that is different.
