He actually taught at the college part-time for awhile.  They have been swindling folks all over Lake County for years.

Additional interesting name in the court filings.

<facepalm>

Was there just zero discernment during the Schaap years?

...for crying out loud. I can name you a hundred men that would love to teach part time, and that have a lifetime of holiness and experience to offer.

Utter carelessness. Mind-boggling carelessness. Given tremendous opportunities to lead and mentor and instead lighting a match and setting it all on fire.

Sorry to vent.

This was in full bloom in the 90s and did not start in the Schaap years. The fraud goes back decades.

Still works at HAC according to his and his wife's FB page...??

Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't she is, or at least was, the business manager or money person for the ministries?  Shortly after her installment in that position, and with the help of Schaap and Lapina, all the business matters were consolidated at FBCH and every expense, deposit, and the like went through her hands.....or through her office.

It seems like a lifetime ago when I was there, some things are a little foggy.

The CFO of FBC is Mirian Garcia. Not Marisa. There are at least 5 Garcia families in the membership and I do not know how / if they are related. But Sergio's wife is not the CFO.

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification.

I thought it was Mirian.

I just pulled out my trust ol' church directory. There are actually 15 different Garcia families.
Mirian Garcia is married to Hector Garcia, and she is the FCO of First Baptist Church.
This is not the woman referenced in the newspaper article, who is Marisa Garcia, married to Sergio Garcia.

Interestingly enough, under the Times newspaper article posted online today about the story (not as much detail as the Gazette's story), someone left a comment that these men should not be held accountable, as they were only trying to feed their families.

Isn't the CFO Rick Sparks?

No.

The duly elected member of the board who is a CPA tax attorney in real life is the actual person overseeing the finances of all the corporations.

Miriam is the one who does the day to day book keeping, is a corporate employee and is not a duly elected corporate officer.

Was it just during the Schaap years?  There was plenty of lack of discernment during the Hyles era, too.

not to beat a dead horse, but I know Rick Sparks was the CFO... when and why did this change?

Rick never has been an elected official of any of FBCHs many corporations.

He is only an employee and is thereby precluded from being an elected official, only the pastor and deacons are eligible.

A few years ago my son mentioned to me this boy in school whose father had bought him a fancy car.  He said how this kid always seemed to have all the nicest newest things.  I knew the kids father to be an arrogant pompous wee man with little man syndrome always flashing cash trying to be a big shot.  Always making it known how much he gave, had and who he knew.  A 4 foot something of man driving a Ginormous Hummer through the school roads.  Not that I have anything against either but it looked ridiculous.

I told my son just wait and watch,  I have been very wealthy financially in life and at times very poor financially in life but one thing I learned is that true wealth doesn't act like that and true wealth isn't found in how much money one flashes.

Today he sent me a link to the story.  And I said "Told you" and he just said "yep".

I told EL one time that it is very easy to become prideful at FBC Ministries because when you present something you do it in front of thousands.  If you sing or perform thousands watch.  The Holiday Star Theater only seats 3400.  Many Pastor Schools were double that.  So dangerous to oneself,  pride lays at the door with each talent. It has ruined many because God does not share His glory.  You steal it from Him you destroy yourself.  Shadows are where it is at.  Stay in the shadows.  There is much more joy there.

Good points and excellent advice!
