At this link to this scriptural reference ; Matthew 5:33-37 KJV is Jesus talking about how in old times, people perform their oaths unto the Lord but then spoke against it even against swearing by that oath as was the practice to signify how "serious" that oath maker was doing this oath for, because per verse 36, we cannot make one hair white or black, meaning we cannot make ourselves good nor to do good by keeping an oath by the flesh when it is His work to finish.

An oath means this is your work; that you are going to do this all that proceeds out of your mouth; Numbers 30:2 KJV God cannot help you do this when this is your oath saying wat YOU will do. Do note how Numbers 30:2 signifies that making an oath binds you to your word to do that which you are making that oath for to finish.

That is why God gives a warning to those who make these oaths in not finishing that oath les God destroy the works of your hands per Ecclesiastes 5:4-7 KJV

So Jesus ending that warning in Matthew 5:37 by saying let your yes be yes and your no be no, because anything beyond that is of evil. That means we are not to say "Yes, I promise.." or "No, I promise".

So stand fast in that liberty and make no promises nor commitment to God to do good or to be good or even add to marriage ceremony with extra vows of love; Galatians 2:15-21 KJV & Galatians 3:1-4 KJV & Galatians 5:1-5 KJV but rather apply your faith, confidence in Jesus Christ to finish His work in you to His glory. Philippians 1:6-11 KJV & 2 Timothy 4:18 KJV & Jude 1:24-25 KJV

Those who have erred by making commitments to Christ or made extra vows of love to each other in the marriage ceremony can ask Jesus Christ for forgiveness 1 John 1:9 KJV and He will set them free John 8:30-36 KJV so they can rest in Him for all things Romans 8:31-39 KJV & Hebrews 4:1-16 KJV and be ready to go when the Bridegroom comes by not being overcharged for the cares of this life to escape what is coming on the earth Luke 21:33-36 KJV
