Are dress standards dead in a majority of churches?

It feels like dress standards in my church are just completely gone. I thought for years that our Pastors heart was for standards, but they were never preached on. Leadership wives in our church wear pants openly to activities.  This has really worried me, and I need to know if it is like this everywhere?  Thanks

Yes, it is like that everywhere.

Shouldn't your Pastor's heart be about loving Jesus and his congregation instead of standards anyway? I don't recall Jesus ever preaching at some woman whose robe was too short. In fact, the woman caught in the act adultery probably never had the opportunity to cover herself properly and Jesus never called her out for her assumed improper attire (if she was wearing any attire at all).

I'd be more concerned if your pastor's heart was for standards instead of for God's people.

Considering some of the "leadership wives" I've met from time to time, I don't want to see them without pants.

I think this one is trolling.

This is a bit general, and will be hard to answer.  Nearly every church has standards at some level - I don't know many churches that would allow a Sunday School teacher to teach in lingerie or in a bikini, for example.

But I don't know anyone on here that can answer for a "majority of churches"...

Our church has standards for choir members and Sunday School teachers and other church leaders (not just in the manner of dress).

We do not teach that a man wearing a coat & tie is more spiritual, and the pastor has preached against looking down on people who are dressed differently than we are.

So, yes, we have "dress standards" for various positions, but what is preached is what the Holy Spirit dictated: "modesty" and "modest apparel"

Yes I do understand this, and I am very thankful for a grace filled Pastor.  Thank you, but no thank you to the rude mocking comments, seriously grow up, I would like to talk about this like an adult.  If you would just let me be open I would say that 15 years ago it was understood that ladies wore skirts, and I am wanting to sincerely understand the change.  These are the ladies that are like 'Titus' women to me and they have all changed.  This one is more than just dress standards, along with the standards their hearts have changed, CCM is borderline ok, separation is not as important, and it is not for the good.  I am sincerely scared we are falling into a liberal trap.  I would love some godly direction.  If we could all be honest it is not the way it was 15 years ago and I am searching for why????

Just because something was done a certain way in "the good old days" doesn't mean it was right.

Remember, Paul's definition of immodesty was dressing UP and not dressing down.

Concerning the other issues, where did Jesus say that such things matter? Does leadership LOVE the people? Do the LOVE God? Do they encourage folks to LOVE one another as themselves? Everything else is just dressing (no pun intended).

Anyone who equates women wearing slacks with liberalism isn't discussing anything like an adult. That kind of simplistic moral equivalence is kid stuff.

But I know people like this guy so I'm giving the benefit of the doubt. :)

I sincerely will answer...do what you want with it.  The real shame is that somehow women wearing slacks is equated with liberalism.  Their slacks are made for them and not for men.  That pastors ever spent time preaching against women wearing slacks instead of sound biblical doctrine is a sad commentary on the church.  Theologically you will not find anyone more conservative than I am...I am conservative because I let the Scripture speak for itself, and it teaches modesty in our dress, so that's what I teach.  Your emotional reaction to these ladies wearing slacks is based more on poor teaching rather than sound biblical principles...and it should bother you more that some pastor did that to you than seeing women wearing slacks.  Now if you are a Bible believing Christian than you should believe in the priesthood of all believers and ultimately you are responsible for knowing what the Scripture teaches. It seems like far too many you have let your preacher become your final authority rather than the Word.  Don't know if this helps...hope so.

Thankyou for your reply!  FYI I am actually a lady, and I am new to this forum so I do not know what a Troll is?  Ackward... but I see people on here that can actually help me with-out attacking so thank you for that.  (Just a thought, my husband would NEVER speak to a women with that tone, and would find it dishonoring for me to allow someone to speak to me that way....  Respect for fellow believers, iron sharpeneth iron.) This issue, even if it may seem childish to some actually does matter a whole bunch to me and to my family.  We are concerned that it leads to the road to liberalism. We are actually considering moving to a church across state from us because of this and other issues.  This one is the issue that shocked us and got us thinking about the direction of our church.  It hurts more than you could know.  My husband grew up and graduated from this church, our life has been here.  This matters very very much, and it hurts.  We are seeking Gods mind with great caution. Studying the history of churches in general and the trend to a fall in dress standards leads to music standards falling, then Bible version issues, then a true liberal church has been born.  My concern about slacks is not the attire or garment description in the Old Testament.  To save this post time I am past that debate, I believe where we differ is our definition of modesty.  While some slacks like culottes are not form fitting and are modest, the great majority are not.  The jeans I see worn are no different than the leggings so popular in the world, except they are made out of denim.  How could that be modest? It seems that when you give people an inch and they take a mile. The same grey area this issue lies with in the Bible is principle, not direct command.  We are living under Grace, Praise the Lord!!!  However what is to stop someone from introducing CCM to our churches with the same arguments that tore apart dress standards.  I do not know how I grew to feel this way.  My husband leads by grace and has NEVER asked me to change for him.  I did it for a personal conviction to be modest, to claim the dignity a lady, a daughter of Christ deserves.  I respect myself enough to not need to share my form with the world.  I will aspire to train the heart of modesty into my daughter.  My Pastor has never preached on this issue.  I have read books, and felt convicted that I was not wearing dresses and skirts truthfully because I was ashamed to claim "Christ-one" with my appearance, I did not want to look different, I was not comfortable standing out.  Many messages Pastor preached did not refer to standards, but with the principle of not being ashamed to claim His name I was moved to wear scrub skirts also to work.  (I had worn only skirts for 5 years at home, but wore scrub pants to work in the hospital because I did not want to stand out).  My motivation was not legalism, works salvation, but modesty and testimony.  I had a Phillipino man approach me about my 'attire' and he asked if I was Baptist.  It opened the door to inviting him and his family to our church, he knew I was Baptist by my attire because he grew up Baptist in the Phillipines, and hasn't found a church here in America yet. That is not my good works, that is God reaching people unhindered because His servants are willing to stand out for Him.  I am struggling to understand why we are dropping this standard?  Is it because some loud speakers on the issue (Hyles- Anderson) lost their testimony?  If so then it is fair to see that satan was truly working in those situation in more than one way, I do not want satan to claim the victory.  Reacting to satan attacks is not a fair substitute for reacting to Gods principles.  He called us to be separate, dress standards, music standards are a very important part of being separate to my family.  Are we going to find like minded brethren anywhere???? Our we so old fashioned that we will not find a church that holds dress standards again, or if they do it is only a matter of time before they fall????  Thank you so much for your thoughts, I can see a desire to help in your reply.

Just so you understand...I have no problem with personal standards and a desire to dress in what you believe glorifies Christ.  What I do have a problem with is you or anyone else super imposing your standards of wearing a dress and not slacks on other godly Christian women...then stating that their wearing slacks is akin to liberalism or the working of Satan in some way.  That is offensive at its roots...and it is not based in biblical doctrine.  I can see by your reference to CCM you feel the same way there...too bad, you will miss out on some great music that glorifies God (yes I know there is some bad there, just as there is some bad in your Baptist Hymnal).  But once again you equate a preference in music that some wonderful Christ loving, Gospel sharing Christians prefer as being either liberal or Satanic.  If you enjoy just the old hymns (which BTW are contemporary to what the church used to sing) more power to you!  But be careful you don't judge the Lord's people and suppose that your standards are God's standards...you might just equate something God is doing in people's lives to Satan---and that would be blasphemous!

Thank you... but we do disagree on that, and your view point reinforces that idea in my mind.  I will honestly pray and search for Gods will if I am being narrow minded based on mans teaches or Gods teachings.  It is good to search our souls.  As for today I am very against the root of CCM.  I do really believe satan is working worldliness into our churches to help them fall.  I am sure you have met people with the same reaction to CCM.  Please understand we are fighting to preserve what we believe is being attacked by satan.  With love thank you for your reply!

Well, there, see? As soon as you allow women to wear pants, it leads to CCM, and surely the end of the age is upon us.  (It's in Revelation, people!!!)

I also note for the record that dmedicinus has provided zero examples of actual liberalism. (Hurt feelings about looser dress codes do not count.)

Hmmm very interesting reply.  I am new to internet forums.  I came here in hopes to find an answer about the condition of other IFB churches in general.  I guess to put it politely, if you were sitting as a guest in my kitchen I would never speak to you that way, even with opposing views.  And if you continued to speak to me that way, my husband would ask you to leave.  Why the brashness???  If you were to have simply asked me what it is that I believe defines a liberal church I would give you my answer.  I honestly believe that when the church incorporates so much of the world that you can no longer tell it apart from the church it is a tell tale sign that it had already gone liberal years ago.  I understand that only in a cult like church would everyone be in the same area of growth, but the absolute absence of standards is not pleasing to the Lord.  To put it bluntly there is a ditch on both sides of the road.  I think the purpose of this thread has been well served for me.  I got the answer to my question and a few were very sincere and kind to me even though they shared different view.  Thank you again.

The truth is that society has changed.  It used to be proper for men to wear hats when they went outdoors. I'm sure when that started to change, some preachers preached against the practice... but now, no one hears anything about it.

Church is made up of people who live in society.  That's why it is very important to have standards that are truly based upon the Word of God and not just what was common 15 (or 25 or 35) years ago.  The churches that changed most likely changed because (a) new leadership didn't believe it, or (b) it just wasn't considered important enough to fight about.

I don't think that it was all that understood 15 years ago -- that was 2000; I'd say the idea that proper lady-like dress is skirts is older -- probably from the 70s or 80s.  I remember the 80s; it seemed that most people agreed that dresses were pretty much mandatory when "dressing up", but only wearing dresses was certainly on its way out at the time -- certainly in society.  It just takes longer for such things to get into churches.

Clearly, the Bible command is modesty; what precisely that means today is the issue.

Just as clearly, a woman wearing slacks or smoking was very unusual in the 1920s.  Today, it is very unusual too see a woman in public wearing a skirt or dress. Does our concept of "modest" come from society? Or does the Bible give us concepts of modesty?
