Arrested for Quoting Bible Verses in Public

I've had some dealings with "street preachers," and I have to say, some of them get themselves into these predicaments through their own disrespectful, hateful, provocative actions. If they're simply stating what the Word of God says, then there's nothing wrong with it. But, many of them don't do that these days. They go above and beyond to be offensive and hateful. I hate to say it, but, unless there's more information I couldn't properly assess this. But, I can bet he was being antagonistic in his actions.

Very true. The left was probably just as antagonistic. I have relatives that are in the LGBTQ+ crowd, lifestyle and all, and they are very provocative in their actions and comments. They know not to get up in my face. I'm not one who backs down easily.

It’s a little frightening that you think this way. The First Amendment doesn’t protect free speech as long as it’s done in a nice, non-antagonistic tone.

It's not frightening at all. One can be very unantagonistic and get their message across quite well. But, if it comes to the necessity of getting loud and mouthy back, one could do it. I know I have at times. But, it takes a lot. Maybe you're just too sympathetic toward being antagonistic. I find a lot of this in your generation.

You often like to toss at me “your generation” comments, but I’ve heard more than one God-fearing, Gospel-preaching minister say from the pulpit that it is your generation that failed my generation—and that’s coming from men of your generation. Your generation of Christians and, politically speaking, conservatives, became doormats and got trampled by liberals, atheists and everything else weird grown from the garden today. I see your thoughts on the First Amendment as further evidence of that type of mentality. Liberals come swinging with baseball bats while your generation has fought back with toothpicks and kind words. Your generation is no World War 2 Great Generation—trust us!

Its one thing to be protected for your "Free Speech" with the first amendment of the constitution. The Constitution allows you to be as surly and antagonistic as you want to be but does such bring honor and glory to the Lord Jesus Christ?

Our citizenship is in heaven and our conversation needs to reflect this! I watched the video clip and see nothing this street preacher did that was wrong aside from possibly poor judgment in being down there in the first place. That Police Sergeant was way out of line and has opened himself and his department up to legal action!

I think you and Joe might be viewing this story differently than I am. I understand that our speech should glorify God and be edifying, including street preaching. I’m talking about First Amendment free speech regardless of content. The Left has been very aggressive and in-your-face with their tactics, while the Right continues to capitulate more and more and more….

Not capitulating in the least! Christians are held to a higher standard than the constitution. From a constitutional free speech standpoint, I would defend the likes of Fred Phelps while at the same time making it clear that his actions brought dishonor upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ!

But this fella didn’t do anything (at least not that you can tell) to dishonor Christ. I’m going to come down on the side of our forum youngin’ on this one.

You, sir, have proven to be a disrespectful, jackass of a person. I usually get along with you, but, when you become snarky, as you've been lately with me, you'll get the same kind of response you're getting from me now. I don't fit with a lot of MY generation because I'm not one who backs down or falls for the PC $#!+ that goes on with them. I remain among the outspoken of my generation in standing up for the truth. And I don't back down from twits. I think you know that by now. If you don't like what I've posted, skip it. I toss the "your generation" statements toward you because this is what I've seen and experienced in many years of dealing with people your age. You seem to fit quite nicely among them. And to be clear, you don't know me from Adam, and you've got no idea where I stand, and I sincerely doubt you have any idea what believe about I believe about the First Amendment of the US Constitution. Rant over. Have a nice day, brother.

No offense, Joe, but this is your modus operandi whenever someone stands up to you. I’ve seen the pattern repeated with others. I’m not being snarky, I’m just tired of you tossing “your generation” comments out. You come across like the angry old man on the porch shaking his cane in the air yelling at kids to get off his lawn. And you have a good day as well. 😬

Assuming that there's not more to this story, justifying the police reaction, and there's nothing we don't see that occurred outside the 5 minute video, this is an alarming foreboding display of suppression of free speech directed at Christian activity that has long been explicitly protected. I'm going to count this as one idiot cop with an agenda and a one off, but I fear that instead of a rarity it is a harbinger of things to come. Next thing ya know the justice department will be infiltrating the PTO to see how to suppress parental involvement in school curricula.

That was my original intent in sharing this story. Also, I want to use extreme caution and sensitivity when making this statement, but in reviewing the video, I can’t help but wonder if some of the law enforcement officers at the scene had a vested interest in their protective reaction of letting the folks at the parade “have their day” and coming down hard against the guy quoting Bible verses in a public space.

I am really not certain where there would be a "Fight" here! I fully support this street preacher in question and have spoken words of encouragement on his YouTube video. I also suggested that he have others with him fully document his activities with video and audio recordings because it was the video of this bystander that literally saved his butt from being railroaded with false accusations!

My further commentary is of a broader nature not necessarily focused upon this street preacher but others who have behaved themselves in a less than "Christ-Like" manner! Whether the US Constitution exists or not, we are COMMANDED TO PREACH nonetheless! Now, how would a Christian conduct themselves if they didn't have the first amendment to hide behind? How did the Apostles conduct themselves in the oppressive, tyrannical society that stopped at nothing to have them silenced or killed?

I probably agree. What do you mean by "vested interest"?

They said that they would preach Christ and obey God rather than men. But the essence of your post is generally agreeable to my understanding. I will leave the decision up to the conscience of the preacher, as to whether he wants to serve jail time for the offense of the gospel. What I don't agree with is that simply by preaching the Bible, and particulaly those offensive parts about (homo)sexuality, that a person should be silenced under threat of jail.

If we look back at the Deep South during the Civil Rights Era (and before), we know many people of color were falsely accused and arrested by police officers who were sympathetic (and often identified with) to white people. Obviously there were legitimate arrests of black people, but it was very easy to have a black person accused and arrested in a system that strongly favored the white population—from the governor to the district attorney and down to the local police chief.

Today, society is rapidly changing and those governors in many states are non sympathetic to the conservative Christians, the district attorneys are openly refusing to prosecute criminals (particularly if they fall into a “marginalized” category), and the makeup of who police officers are is increasingly changing as well—especially when departments are being targeted with being cancelled or budgets being reduced.

I realize I gave you a non-answer answer, but as I said before, I want to be sensitive to what my intuition tells me.
