First musical I ever saw was Godspell. Also not without its difficulties, if I remember correctly, but not nearly as irreverent as JCS. At least it was composed by an actual churchgoer.
I saw a stage production of Godspell at a community college about 25 years ago. Coming from an IFB background, I was skeptical of it but I was told that as written, the creators of the play wrote two endings and left it up to the preformers as to which they wanted to use; with or without the Resurrection. I saw the version with the Resurrection. I don't remember much of it but I too recall that the play still contained a bunch of theological errors, albeit, not rising to the level of blasphemy.

I was familiar with JCS's musical score but never had any desire to take in what even in my BC days I thought was just a hippy production about religion. Never gave it much thought. Ever.
