Also in a lot of today's modern evangelical efforts, in the soul winning that's being done, repentance seems to be missing. And this is a tragedy because repentance is necessary for true conversion. It is necessary for salvation.

I think one of the reasons why repentance is left out in a lot of today's evangelical efforts is simply because repentance is a rarity in today's preaching. Now I understand that the preaching of repentance can still be found, although you may have to search a while. But with a lot of the false gospels today: Prosperity, Humanism, Universalism, Hebrew Roots, Charismatic, name it and claim it, etc. It can be understood why repentance is not mentioned anymore. It is not right. But again, one can understand the reason due to the apostasy in many of the churches and the falling away that is taking place now.

No matter how you look at it. Repentance is necessary for salvation. Let us look at the Scriptures and see what they say on this important matter:

15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.
16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. - Mark 2:15-17 (KJV)

3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. - Luke 3:3-8 (KJV)

29 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
30 But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.
32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. - Luke 5:29-32 (KJV)

4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.
7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. - Luke 15:4-7 (KJV)

44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 And ye are witnesses of these things. - Luke 24:44-48 (KJV)

31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. - Acts 5:31 (KJV)

13 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;
14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.
15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?
18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life. - Acts 11:13-18 (KJV)

16 For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.
17 And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church.
18 And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons,
19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:
20 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house,
21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
22 And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there:
23 Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.
24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.
25 And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.
26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.
27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. - Acts 20:16-27 (KJV)

15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.
16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,
18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:
20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.
21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me.
22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:
23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. - Acts 26:15-23 (KJV)

3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? - Romans 2:3-4 (KJV)

6 Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
7 And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.
8 For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season.
9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. - 2 Corinthians 7:3-10 (KJV)

22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.
24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. - 2 Timothy 2:22-26 (KJV)

6
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
3 And this will we do, if God permit. - Hebrews 6:1-3 (KJV)

14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. - Hebrews 12:14-17 (KJV)

9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. - 2 Peter 3:9 (KJV)

As we can see, Repentance is all through the Scriptures. So for pastors, preachers, soul winners, and harvesters to be omitting repentance from the Gospel is very sad. That's why there are so many false converts today who think they are saved just because they prayed some prayer. But they really are not. Because when they prayed the prayer, they did not mean it. They prayed it nonchalantly. They prayed the prayer just so that the preacher, or the pastor, or soul winner and harvester would simply go away quicker.

Repentance needs to be preached and shared when soul winning is being done. Repentance is coming to the end of yourself. It is recognizing that you are a sinner and worthy of God's holy wrath. Repentance leads the way for salvation. Salvation really is simple. The only hard part of salvation is repentance. So many people want to hold on to their self righteousness and pride. But you must humble yourself and come to God as a sinner. Before you can be saved, you have to be lost. That is realizing that you are a sinner that your self righteousness and good works cannot save you. That's also why all the cults and false religions (like Islam and Roman Catholicism) in the world don't like it when people have assurance of Salvation.

But true Biblical Christianity brings assurance of Salvation. Biblical Assurance of Salvation shows those self righteous people that you are not depending on any of your good works to save you because the blood of Jesus and His finished work on the cross of Calvary is enough and totally sufficient for Biblical Salvation.

I remember in my days before my eyes were opened to the Bible Version Issue, I would watch Paul Washer and how he would attack the "Alter Call" mentality in a lot in his sermons. I can see why though he was against the alter calls. After all, there are no alter calls recorded in Scripture.

Hopefully this will be a help to those of you who are labourers and harvesters of the Gospel. To encourage you to remember to preach repentance in your witnessing and evangelical efforts. Blessings.

Amen!

Without repentance, what is Christ saving us from?

Most people present Christ merely as the savior from hell, but the first mention of Christ in Matthew says "he shall save his people from their sins."

People looking for a savior from their sins are repenting people.

Now here is a thread we can agree on!

Repent means to "rethink" or "think differently", or better still, "change your mind".

I only bring this up because it is too often used to mean "be sorry for your sins".  Repent, as it pertains to salvation, pretty much means to change your mind about everything.  If you change your mind about your life, you will be sorry about your sins, but you will change your mind about other things, too, like who you depend upon for life.  If you repent of your sins, but continue to think you have your own righteousness, you haven't really repented, since relying on your own righteousness is itself a sin.

Also, repent is often used in many other contexts, too, where it simply means "change your mind".

The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec

There's no inference there about sins.  God simply will not change his mind about this.

I think we agree. As long as it is understood that every act of repentance unto salvation definitely involves sorrow for sin.

We agree.  I'm just a compulsive something or other. ;)

Wow, good point! Seems like a lot of people don't think about that these days.

It's interesting; I remember one time listening to Peter Ruckman, and he said that people go to hell not for what they do but for what they don't do. He said that people go to Hell for not taking the cure for sin. Jesus Christ is the cure, and yet people will not take the cure for their sin. And so when they die, they end up in Hell as misfits. What a shame. What an absolute shame for a person to go to a place that he had no business going to in the first place.

This idea assumes that people go to heaven (however you define that) for what they do, an idea I find to be anathema.

I like to explain repentance as turning away from AND turning toward Christ.

Or, turning toward Christ and turning away from sin. They go together for Biblical repentance.
