Jerry Falwell would sometimes take a strong stand and then back down with apologies, but he did have the courage to have Billy Graham speak at his church.
Several sites quote Falwell as saying that Graham was Satan's chief agent in the US, but none of them give the date or the place, and the quote appears to be false.
The Billy Graham evangelistic association has issued this statement from evangelist Rev. Dr. Billy Graham concerning the death of Jerry Falwell:
"Jerry Falwell was a close personal friend for many years. We did not always agree on everything, but I knew him to be a man of God. His accomplishments went beyond most clergy of his generation. Some of my grandchildren have attended and currently attend Liberty University. He leaves a gigantic vacuum in the evangelical world. I am praying for his family, and especially the university that he headed."

I would bet the farm that Falwell never made such a statement. Jerry just never was a strong "separatist" in the mode of the Jones'es. Early in his ministry he associated with, and hired. people like Doug Oldham that while employed, appeared in many places Jerry wouldn't have at the time. He brought in professors from what the hard-core fundy's would term "neo-evangelical". Falwell never had the fundy phobia of many X'ers.
As to Graham and his treatment by many in the Fundamentalist ranks, it was rather hypocritical. Billy Sunday did the very same things that Graham did, including sending people back to churches they wouldn't approve of, but yet he has dorms named after him at some "separatist's" universities. I think one of Graham's biggest "sins" was integration of his crusades. Good for him! I'm sure leaving BJU didn't endear himself either.
