There is a huge difference between an allergy to a food, and an allergy to a chemical additive.

Anything added to food is a chemical additive. Disaccharide is often added to food. Found in breads, candies, jellies, soups, pasta sauce, and many, many other things.

You might know it as "sugar".

And we can't forget that dangerous, often fatal when ingested in sufficient amounts, highly reactive chemical used not only in food but also to make yoga mats: dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO).

Come on, azodicarbonamide is not equivalent to adding sugar to bread.  It's not approved for food in Australia or the EU.  And there are other known safe ingredients that do the same thing.

I don't blame my allergic reaction to Subway food on that chemical.  I had the same Subway sandwich dozens of times before I had that allergic reaction.  I have no idea why it hit me that one time.  But I play it safe by not eating there anymore. 

Besides, Jersey Mikes makes WAY superior subs.  So does Lenny's.

Except for reviving the original Star Trek TV series for a (tragic) third season, has any boycott or letter-writing campaign against the large companies made a difference?

Subway changed the formulation of their bread, removing an additive called azodicarbonamide (the so-called "yoga-mat chemical"), based on a campaign spearheaded by the blogger Vani Hari, aka the Food Babe.

Of course, she is more full of crap than a portable toilet at Lollapalooza, but even the threat of bad PR (reality-based or otherwise) is often sufficient to persuade companies to make changes.

I ended up in anaphylactic shock, after eating Subway, and my respiratory therapist father rushed me to the ER where my Mother worked.
He knew that I would have died.
He knew that Subway caused it.

He sent me a link to the story, when it came out, saying "I told you so".

I never ate at Subway again, until this year.

Same thing happened to my oldest son when he was one year old - within 5 minutes of my wife giving him his first bite of scrambled egg with nothing added. He almost died that night.

So, is he allergic to eggs?

Initially, yes. The next week we took him to a pediatric allergist who discovered he was  highly allergic to peanuts. The allergist said that he would outgrow the egg allergy but not the peanut allergy. When he was 7-8, under the allergist's supervision, we introduced him to eggs slowly. He did outgrow it. His last peanut hull reaction was about 3 years ago when he was playing basketball. His throat started tightening up, he was having problems breathing, his face became red and he knew he was reacting. Turns out, one of the players ate a peanut butter sandwich in the car before the game and apparently some peanut butter oil got on the basketball and he reacted. He still carries the Epi-Pen with him at all times.

The idea of the EU banning something as a result of junk science isn't entirely new.

And Firehouse has the best subs.
