Yes Kirk was usually reserved and respectful in his discourse…yet t they still murdered him. Which goes to the point that hatred and vitriol run deep.

J. D. Vance tweeted something similar. They became friends some time ago, and he particularly remarked how much he enjoyed their religious discussions/debates (Vance also being Catholic).

One of my favorite former coworker is Catholic and the spiritual conversations we had were a wonderful experience. Take the doctrinal debates out and what was left was a pair of guys working out their salvation.

Maybe, but one side in particular is disproportionately over-represented when it comes to political violence and assassination.

Maybe John Wilkes Booth could be considerled right-wing, being pro-slavery and pro-Confederacy. The (would-be) assassins of Garfield and Reagan were loons, and perhaps acting for personal rather than political reasons. And I think we still don't know enough about Trump's shooter to ascribe a specific political motive. Other than that, from McKinley on up, I can only think of progressives and political radicals.

I come from a fairly Catholic hometown, and had similar discussions around the break table at my summer jobs. May be the main reason I'm more ecumenical in practice than my theological convictions might suggest.

Your moral equivalency argument aside, the left, by their “Trump is a racist and fascist and will end Democracy and have no further elections etc” arguments give loons a reason to be extreme.

According to a Rutgers University poll:
Murder Justification: 31% and 38% of respondents stated it would be at least somewhat justified to murder Elon Musk and President Trump, respectively.

These effects were driven by respondents that self-identified as left of center, with 48% and 55% somewhat justifying murder for Elon Musk and President Trump, respectively.

Property Destruction: Nearly 40% of respondents stated it is at least somewhat acceptable to destroy a Tesla dealership in protest.

I didn't think I live under a rock, but apparently I do. Other than hearing his name occasionally prior to the assassination, I don't think I've ever watched any of his videos or read anything he's written. I could not have told you if he was a liberal or conservative - that's how little I knew about him. Of course, the current political landscape has zero appeal to me.

Based on what I've seen on social media, this has succeeded in its intended goal: further dividing and polarizing this country.

I dare say I know as much about right-wing political radicals as anyone else on this forum. Or used to, anyway, years ago.

But being a right-wing political radical doesn't seem to translate all that often into right-wing violence directed against left-wing politicians. The bullets fly, by and large, in one direction.

Off the top of my head I can think of a couple of exceptions, but they're also so obvious that they represent the proverbial exceptions that prove the rule.

Everyone's talking about the competence of the FBi right now. Frankly, catching a suspect who's fled the scene, in less than 48 hours, probably isn't half bad.
