While I'm not a fan of IFBxishness, I agree that SFL is a hole of bitter contempt with no redeeming value.

If they found writing or a video link of an IFB preacher saying that he pust his toilet paper on the spool over rather  than under and that he wipes himself with his right hand they would all go home and switch the paper and become lefties!

Does his kids have any freinds?

Sad.

He said, "close friends". I'm sure any good parent lost or born again would want their children's friends that are close, to be going in the same direction they are going.

I can remember as a kid that there were other kids that were not allowed to hang around me and my brothers (and for good reason) none of the parents were IFB mine or the others.  In fact, they were Catholic and my parents didn't go to church.

Why did these lost parents not want their children around us?  Because, they were raising their children differently and going in a different direction.

My children would not be allowed to be a close friend with me when I was a kid.

Church folk do not have a monopoly on morality. Additionally,  some church folk can be among the most immoral.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world...

Exactly my point, how do you teach your children them to engage people who are not believers? Do you teach them they are the "boogie-man"? My kids hang out with both believing families and unbelieving families. Our neighbors across the street are not believers, their kids are the same age, we invite them over, befriend them and get to know them since we are going to be together for a while. We are commanded to love our neighbors, not put limitations on contact.

1 Cor 5:10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.

Which sounds pretty good to me, sometimes.

Hey bro, I know people jump to conclusions rather quickly here, and I don't want to be that way, so a question or two is in order.  Are you saying essentially that your church folk appreciate and prioritize church in their lives at the top of the rung, and if you want to get to be in their close circle that a person needs to value what they value?  And contrarily, would you preclude people from being your kids friends if they refused to get to know them via your recommended method (at church everytime the doors open)?

Put another way, would you care to expound on your social media thought, particularly regarding how our children relate to those outside the church?

Maybe it is a we don't cuss, drink, smoke or chew. Nor do we run with those that do.  :D

I have heard many make similar statements.  It is not intended as a rebuke, but an invitation.  This is where we are and what we do.  If you want to hang out with me, this is where you can find me.  My son received an invitation not long ago to join some schoolmates for a canoe trip and picnic and party.  It conflicted with church schedule, so he won't be there.  Church ministry is a high priority for our family.  If those chums want to chum around with him, here is where they can find him.

I don't see this any different than someone leaving the factory telling his co-workers where they can find him this weekend if they want to hang out - "Hey, I will be at ___________" if you want to have a good time!  Well, a pastor said, "Our kids will be at church if you want to hang out and have a good time!"

All friendships are not equal. We all have friends that we are closer with than we are with other people. If we are discerning, our close friends are spiritual friends.

The word friend today is used to broadly, it can mean anything from saying hello to someone (ie being friendly) to being very close to someone (ie a best friend). We use the word friend in situation where what we mean is fellowship or communion.

Jesus was a friend of sinners, but he had no fellowship with them. Within the twelve, there were three that were closer to the Lord than the other nine, and within the three there was one closer than the other two. Choosing the "level" of friendship you exhibit to others is certainly scriptural especially if you are using the word friend/friendship to include fellowship.

I teach my my children we are supposed to be friends TO everyone generally, but we are to choose who we are friends WITH carefully. And, I teach them that in the church, we are to have closer friendships/fellowship only with those whose lives line up with the scriptures. It is the difference between being friends with someone, who I have fellowship with, and who I have close fellowship with.

You can rant all you want, but you better filter your kids friends, if you don't, pretty soon their friend is a modern day Jonadab. Wonder if David ever regretted letting Amnon get close to his cousin Jonadab.

I don't know that I see any ranting and I am certainly not against "filtering". We guided our kids social interactions. I think the issue is that Tom tied it all to church and intended or not, came across in a very condescending way.

FWIW

My kids played little league but I went to every practice and game.

My kids hosted sleepovers because I would rather the friend be in my home instead of mine in theirs.

Our home was wide open to the neighbor kids. And almost all of them ended up coming to a church event as guests of our kids.

So you don't start with "if you want to be my friend it will have to happen at church". And if you are at church so much that you don't have time to make friends with the unsaved around you then there is probably too much church in your schedule.

I loved it when my kids were young. Our goal was to be the place all the neighbor kids wanted to be.

He didn't. The facebook post in question was addressed to parents, not to the kids.
