I'm sure we have all seen the photos and read what Dave Hyles posted on his FB after his recent visit to Hammond.  As we have discussed on many threads, we all know him in a different way depending on when you attended HAC/FBCH.

As for my time at HAC, Dave was the youth pastor at FBCH and taught Church Ed and a few other classes at HAC.  He was an excellent teacher.  He always dressed sharp and carried himself well.  He seemed to be able to relate to the Hacker as well as the normal student.  He was a favorite preacher in chapel.

I believe it was after my first or second year at HAC that Dave left to pastor in Texas.  I knew or had heard nothing about any problems.  Again, I was just a college kid.  I remember when the students were allowed to vote for their favorite out of town preacher to come back and preach in chapel.  Dave was one of the top 3.

Of course, we all have now heard about the things that were going on and the hurt he caused.  Sad indeed.

Here is the topic for this thread.  In your opinion, what does Dave Hyles need to do at this point in his life to be restored or to show repentance?  is it possible for him to make things right?

Here is one of Dave's observations on his trip:

8. Pastor Wilkerson seems like a genuine and caring pastor. I do not know him well, but he was gracious to me in spite of the fact that a couple of his own staff men would be displeased at him treating me like a human, Just acknowledging our presence, I am sure brought him criticism, but he was gracious anyway, and it allowed others who love us to know we were there so they could greet us. It is evident that he has won the hearts of the people and we are all pleased to see that. When he spoke about God touching his heart at the 1980 Youth Conference when the theme was 'So You Want To Be a Star" I kinda felt that was for me because I was the one who was still leading the Your Conference then.

Dave Hyles is human and loved by God. I do not know what steps he has taken to seek forgiveness of others or how he has attempted to restore 'life' back to his victims. I do not know the man so I can't say whether he has truly repented.

I'm glad Wilkerson treated him with grace and respect. Dave does deserve that much. If that is truly the case, Wilkerson set a godly example in doing so, IMHO.

I agree.
I detest what DH has done, but I know had Jesus been the one leading the service that day, HE would have done the same, and perhaps, those in attendance saw Jesus in Bro. Wilkerson .

By Dave's own account, he is restored. To add to the original question, what must Jack Schaap do to be restored?

Another 8 or 9 years.

Seriously, as I was posting about DH, I thought perhaps that's the kindness and graciousness that ought to be shown to anyone - including JS - whether we feel like it or whether we want to or not.

I agree....it's a tough one. That forgiving attitude may also embolden the perpetrator because, hey, I can always be restored.

Depends on what the view of 'restored' means.

Should a recent adulterer pastor a church a year later? How about 10 years later after remaining faithful? 30 years? Can a recent adulterer teach a Sunday School class? How about operate a Rescue Mission? Food pantry?

What about someone who is addicted to prescription drugs? Where are they allowed to minister after their sobriety?

Too many variables to make a blanket decision, IMHO.

Agreed.  It also seems that everyone has a different idea of what one must do to be restored.

My opinion of course, I really believe that if he has truly repented before God he would lay low, no blogging, no books and the like. There would be shame but popping up on blogs and books, to me, shows no shame.

Him showing up with his mom.........well, it is his mom.

Grace is sometimes difficult. The balance between forgiving and forgetting is also a fine line. I may have to forgive Dave, but I wouldn't let my daughter anywhere near him or Jack Schaap.

My daughter's name is Grace, and yes, she can be difficult.

I try to always give Pastor Wilkerson the benefit of the doubt as he appears quite genuine but, was this bit of Dave Hyles rear kissing too much? Or am I overthinking things?

Unless she had a GLOCK.

We're any of the victims or victims' families in attendance?

restoration can only happen after repentance.  Let him acknowledge his crimes before you ask me to accept his restoration.

Are you thinking a public acknowledgement?

I believe that Wilkerson was sincere and genuine in his appropriate Godly example.  Definitely reminds me of how Christ has treated each of us.

"So you want to be a star"

a.k.a "So you want to be like us"
