Lord willing, I’m leaving in the morning for a Mission Trip to St Lucia. This will be my third trip to the island. We are scheduled to meet one on 2-3 with Pastors and to teach in a Pastor’s Conference. They specifically asked that one of our subjects be ‘demons’. Evidently there is a strong ‘spiritualism’ element there. I gather it’s a mishmash of Catholic and occultist beliefs.

I’m starting with the biblical origins of Satan and demons and ending up with spiritual warfare. It’s not a problem I’ve dealt with directly or openly in central NC but have encountered it in Cuba once or twice.

Anyone here had experience with the occult/supernatural?

Not since Corky.

Spiritual warfare is quite real although I desire not to get overly "mystical" about the matter. We have seen some wonderful breakthroughs with family members both here in the States as well as in the Philippines but such has not been without consequences. The main Church we are working with have established a regular Bible study in our Barangay and many have come to faith in Christ and are faithfully serving the Lord. The Pastor of this church had his daughter molested by one of his associate pastors and this nearly ripped the Church apart. We are still recovering from this but the church is stronger than ever and the work is continuing! Satan also attacks through those we care about (thus having the capability to hit us the hardest) and we must be mindful of this! When you are having a conflict with your spouse, you may want to take a moment and ask yourself regarding the source of such strife.

Will be praying for you!

Please have you and others lay a strong prayer support to the Lord, and do not get into charasmatic Chaos, but just teach and preach the Lord jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit over there

Aren't you glad Satan is bound?

We returned from our trip about 3:00 am Tuesday morning after spending 4+ hours at the gate…in the plane…due to weather. We met with a group of Pastors who identify as Evangelical. They were orthodox in basic theology but held widely diverse views on a few things….including ‘demons in the modern world’.

I spoke on the origin of Satan and demons and moved to spiritual warfare. During our Q&A time, their main interest seemed to be what I might call demonization. Demon possession, influence and oppression. There was a divide among the National Pastors as to what that entails and how to deal with it. Some were extremely offended by the belief that Christians cannot be demon possessed, which was expressed by about half of them.

Many had personal experiences as to casting our demons. It was fairly uncomfortable for me as I didn’t want to do anything to cause harm in their ongoing relationships since I was only there for a few days.

Personally I have always believed that a Christian can be influenced or oppressed by Demons but not ‘possessed’. Truthfully it’s not something I’d given much time or study.

The best author to read as research on this issue of demonism and spiritual warfare would be Kurt Koch, as he had on hands experiences, and was very balanced, holding to demons and the occult could and did bother Christians, but not to be casting demons out for car engine troubles, catching the flu etc

Seems to me that any evil spirit attempting to possess a confessing Christian would be handily defeated by the Holy Spirit who's already there. I don't think the Bible addresses this directly, but it's an absurdity to me to suppose the body of a redeemed Christian could become a literal battleground between God and the devil.

Here's an interesting lecture.

[26:34]
All of these ideas …. are interconnected in the Old Testament mind as part of the Messianic profile: the Messiah will have power over the Terror of the Night [Lilit]. The Messiah will have power over the Terror of the Day [Reseph]. Again, nighttime demon, daytime demon. The Messiah will have power over pestilence, Deber; destruction, Ketev, both of them are buddies of Mot, Death in Hosea 13:14.
Lilit, Reseph, Deber, Ketev (sp?), and Mot in the quote above are names of ANE gods. These things were understood by the Jewish masses. Unlike us, they were well aware of the cultures and deities of the various nations, how they manifested themselves, and where they were referenced in the OT.
One striking similarity to modern experiences is in "The Terror by Night," a proper noun, wherein the experiences with this class of entity parallel what we describe today as 'sleep paralysis,' or 'a terrifying presence.' That description starts here. But if you skip ahead, you miss about 10 minutes of some needed exposition.
All in all, an excellent lecture, by Michael Heiser.
