Does modern day missionary deputation square with the bible? Did Paul go around asking for support before he made his journeys? He was a tent maker and worked when he had to, right. Why should missionaries expect to get fully supported while plenty of preachers have started a church somewhere while working full or part time?

In 1 Cor.9, Paul says:

1 Corinthians 9:13-14
Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in what is sacrificed on the altar?
In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.

So Paul acknowledged that preachers have that right to be paid for their services, although he did not exercise the right himself. See v 15).

Yeah, but to ask for it up front from people they won't even be ministering to?

Yeah, making them beggars, salesmen and fund-raisers. I don't think that should really be part of the job. It'd be better if they could go on their mission without the necessity of doing that.

I'm just wondering if that was what the bible intended.

From my reading, I do not think that the bible dictates how to do it.  Its like that with a lot of things in the NT church. The message is clear, the method should be adapted to the culture.

Doesn't seem that adapting to current culture is a wise thing to do. It changes too much...and a lot of times not for the best.

You added the word current. I am referring to different cultures around the world. Different cultures would do it differently.

Gotcha. Sorry about that. I'm about to be gone for a few hours. Hope when I get back there will be a lot of responses to my topics. :)
