Do you dress up for church?

Woe.  He obviously offended you by suggesting we get our righteousness from Christ alone.

I realize that there is a lot of chain-yanking that goes on round here anymore, but it is unbelievable dung like this claim that is so incredulous that it even lacks any entertainment value.  To make the claim that Pappa believes he is righteous somehow apart from Christ is the pinnacle of your inane claims in this thread.  You have made unsubstantiated propositions left and right, but you've outdone yourself in erroneous hyper-rhetorical dung this time.

but when you come in as a newcomer and start right off the bat making these kinds of demands.... it looks to us like you think the force and brilliance of your arrival knocked the previous 2 years of this forum into oblivion.... and we have all awoken to a new world today.....

seriously.... no offense.... just read the thread..... 29 pages.... it;s all in there..... :)

No offense taken.

Demands? I made none.

"The force and brilliance of your arrival..." I'm not following your logic here, but I respect your perspective nonetheless.

Thanks for your kind input.

When you asked condescendingly about Christ's righteousness ("From what I understand, our favor with God comes solely through Christ and His finished work") being our only righteousness what you did was imply self-righteousness was part and parcel of the people who believed in honoring God by giving their best (regarding the attire).  That is the issue in your post to me that I took exception with, and it was the basis for framing my 3 questions to you the way I did.  The questions were not a trap, but an honest attempt to ascertain why you would imply that people were somehow attempting to gain righteousness apart from the work of Christ.

btw... read my post a little more carefully.  I realize that sarcasm is wasted on some people, but thought that I wrote it in such a way to be at least a little telling, along with just a touch of wry humor.

Besides, he is acquitting himself well over on the LGBT thread and has already received a red badge of honor from one of the forum worldlings.  If they hate him that much, he can't be all that bad.

I tried to answer ya, CM.  We dress up for celebrations, at gatherings.  It's human nature.  IMO.

I joined this forum for the possible good Christian fellowship and conversation and its not looking so promising.
Welcome, Yankee!  Now, before you go lighting fires like Sherman waltzing through Atlanta, perhaps you should think this through a little, partner.  It's like this, see.  We "fellowship" by treating EACH OTHER with respect.  This ain't no Bali Hi, and we are not natives waiting to bow at your feet and sacrifice ourselves to your volcanic temper.  Re-examine the tone and tenor of your FIRST POST on this long thread.  It would help our understanding of what you want to know if you would compose your posts in a less condescending manner and if you would provide proof from this thread that anyone has indicated that they dress up to earn favor with God.  Honoring Him, and earning favor are not the same thing.  Methinks you are trying a little rhetorical unkindness of your own.

If it is Biblical reference you want, there are a plenty of them already on the thread.  It just takes a little time to sift through the pages, but you will find them.  I am kind of partial, but you might give a gander over at the top of page 15.

But before you do that, consider our Christian Bible that encourages us to please Him in our soldierly conduct (1Tim 5:00), in our labours in the body (2Cor 5:9), in the preaching of the gospel (1Tim 2:4), and to present ourselves as living sacrifices that are holy and acceptable to Him (Rom 12:1).  Is it your contention that we can do none of these things, but are to be antinomian in our character because we are now accepted in the beloved?

Now, run along and read a little before I start thinking of you as a Yankee prisoner and I start acting like Gen'l Stonewall Jackson on a busy battlefield.  And, welcome to the forum.  *Hat tip </:o)

Great. Not another one!

My first post was very proper and sincere. And, no you cannot add tone or tenor into the written language. So your opinion of my tone is just that, your opinion. And it is incorrect. I asked because I just wanted to know. The rest of what you wrote made no sense at all.

I did not "go off" on Alayman. I felt he went off on me and I responded by pointing out what I felt was him being unkind.

"Is it your contention that we can do none of these things, but are to be antinomian in our character because we are now accepted in the beloved?" - What are you talking about? I never stated my position. I asked a simple, sincere question. And no, it has not been answered anywhere on this thread.

Regarding the "LGBT" comment, I have no clue what you are talking about. I wrote a comment on that thread which was clearly appropriate and orthodox, a good brother kindly reacted with disagreement, I responded with clarification in a kind manner, and he responded back in a Christian manner. Then I closed the disagreement with a final comment. That conversation is a good template of how to properly handle disagreements.

Where are all of the level headed people on this forum?

And Alayman, I see your point. However, there was no condescension, and there was no purposeful implication that people were somehow attempting to gain righteousness apart from the work of Christ. My motive: I just wanted some biblical proofs. I asked out of pure curiosity and self education. I really don't know of any biblical proofs and would like to know.

Present and accounted for. Dressed in a sport coat, of course.

I have usually wandered off by the time threads get this long. I've observed that by then they've almost always wandered from the original topic and have degenerated into personality clashes and squabbling over minutiae. So I just sort of mentally mark such threads at "tl;dr".

What a concept!!

And it's something no one here has argued isn't true...
Do you guys read the actual posts or just argue against what you wish others had said?

I am assuming you are speaking to CM. My post is not arguing for anything nor wishing anything. It asks a question and ends with why I am asking it. Your response wasn't very kind either way.

I was speaking to whom I was speaking....those who put words into the mouth's of others.
If the shoe fit- eth....

If I mischaracterized your post and jumped to wrong conclusions then I apologize.  If you would answer my three questions I believe we could settle some crucial points of the disagreement, or at least have productive conversation about the basis of why people believe their actions honor God.

I'll give you a starter point for discussion.  Some women believe that they honor God by expressing their femininity when they dress only in dresses.  Would you agree or disagree that a Christian woman expressing themselves by wearing dresses only to honor God is justified in their beliefs (particularly assuming they aren't judging other women for not choosing their own scruples/convictions).

For those who attend church services while dressing up out of:
1. reverence to God
2. to show Him respect
3. to honor Him

It would help my understanding if you could provide some biblical proof that He specifically acknowledges your act of dressing up for Him and reacts the way you are intending Him to in seeing you dressing up.

New Testament proofs would be appreciated.

From what I understand, our favor with God comes solely through Christ and His finished work.

1 Tim 2:9,10 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;  But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

"Dressing up" is just a term being used by the OP.  The Bible specifically describes how a woman should adorn herself in modest apparel because the adornment of hair/jewlelry/expensive clothing is futile.  The ornamentation of good works glorifies the Father which should be the goal of a woman who professes godliness.

Matt 5:16  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

.... ..i guess what i am trying to say is that your first post in this thread had the effect of someone coming into a theater during the last ten minutes of a movie .. interrupting everyone and asking them to fill you in on what has happened in the movie so far.... while making a suggestion at the same time that the script of the movie is not only flawed but half the audience is seeing it all the wrong way..... ...

LOL!  Reading the above 2 posts together, I got the impression that the movie playing at the theater was "UP!"

ya know.... with all these recent threads here making attacks on the traditional church
and even attacks by some posters on those of us who believe it;s right to dress nicely for church ...
i am becoming a little concerned.... ...  ???.....but i still haven;t changed my mind and decided to dress down
or go to a different ,sit in a circle and talk, style of church....not at all .... instead i think maybe  i should
go the other way and pay even more attention to dressing up specifically for church and stay right where i am..... .....

i was thinking....... since battle lines are being drawn and things are heating up........
maybe it;s time to switch to something in chain mail.... :-\...

and maybe even something like this over it for even more protection.....

then start carrying one of these......  ::)

the chain mail might be hard to come by..... but i could make the leather armor out of saddle skirting material i have rolled up in my closet.......
and my dad has a scottish claymore sword hanging on his wall.........  ::) ... just a thought........

That would make you a little Joan of Arc sh wouldn't it?

I thought we already had one of those around here...

Instead of chain, you could "go modern" to try and appease the new crowd.  Use pvc plastic cut from 1/4" pipe.  Should still be effective at warding off blows from a weapon, but much lighter than heavy metal chain.

Last week, I was in Duke Medical Center visiting someone in our church family.
The family across the hall also had a Pastor visiting, evidently at their special request.
Their Pastor seemed like a fine young man to me but he was wearing cut off jean shorts, a Simpson T shirt, a shell necklace and flip flops.

As I was leaving, I was chased down the hall by someone in that family and asked to come back to their room....I did....hesitantly. they asked me some questions about Christ, forgiveness, healing etc. I answered them, talked awhile and prayed.

Later, they told the family I originally visited, they wanted a 'real preacher' in their crisis.
I was dressed in business casual....but evidently looked life a real preacher!

Were these people superficial and judgmental?
Or not?

This is a trick question, right?  So they would have been happy with someone who wasn't a real preacher, but played one on TV?

You answered the question with a question?  Were they superficial and judgmental, or not?  No trick question, just one that needs answered.

Here, let me show you how that is done:

My answer is, "no, they are not superficial and judgmental, just some people who need someone who is serious about spirituality instead of playing games at it."  There.  See how easy that was?

Why were you hesitant? I mean you looked the part right? Or did they think you were a detective?
