This aside...I have never understood the fascination with this family...nor the canonization by so many Christians. What am I missing?
I'll try.
My family has enjoyed watching the Duggar family grow up. At first, it was the natural wonder at the size of the family. Then, we were impressed with their attempts to proclaim truth in a non-confrontational manner. These people were willing to allow cameras to follow them every day and kindly explain their beliefs. This impressed us. How would you do with that? As we watched the show, the fun, cute quips from the kids were funny and our family became regular watchers. We bought their books and enjoyed them. As the Duggar girls started getting married, it became a weekly tradition for Mrs. Chuggar and our girls to watch all of the build up.
There were some oddities. Josh was always so - is obnoxious the right word? Jim Bob was too controlling and manipulative. Michelle was flighty and uninvolved with her own kids. They were part of the quiver-full movement, which doesn't really make alot of sense. They were home-church. Still, we respected their stand. It was good, clean television that showed a family that was more like us than the "Modern Family."
Then the news came out. Sad. So, so, so, so sad. Of course, we were sad for the girls who had been violated and the parents (could you imagine it happening in your family?). We were sad for Josh that this past which had been dealt with and repented of and forgiven is now costing him his career, his family their show, and everybody their reputation. Don't forget how this changes some very public figures (the girls) personal lives and the turmoil they are living through again. Just sad.
I believe someone who has repented, gone through the court process, and made amends with the ones they hurt should be forgiven. It seemed that this event was hurting people for what had already been dealt with.
FWIW, I think it odd that a case that was ordered to be sealed and expunged has suddenly come into public view with the names of all the children involved. This alone seems terrible, especially for the victims. Victims don't need their names brought into public view.
However, after a few days, as more came out, we started remembering things said in the show that just didn't add up and made you think - eeewwww. We remembered all of Josh's talk about purity for marriage and Jim Bob's "sex talk" episode. A bunch of lies for public appearance. Eeewww. Apparently, this family was a part of a church that does some pretty odd stuff for confessing sin to the church and some of the old church members decided to share what they know. Apparently, the rumors have been around for quite a while, but not until just recently was there actual proof. Again, the more you realize what had happened in the past, and how they portrayed themselves.....it is sad, but on a different level.
