What's their argument against a spherical earth? I have been in a plane at 35,000 feet and could see the curve of the horizon. Why should I doubt that the curve continues?Sadly, this was posted by a flat-earther Facebook friend who really believes this.

You may not doubt it, but you, personally, can't confirm it, unless you ride the plane all the way around. What's their argument against a spherical earth? I have been in a plane at 35,000 feet and could see the curve of the horizon. Why should I doubt that the curve continues?

It's the difference between Eratosthenes and Columbus.Pfft.
It's the difference between Eratosthenes and Columbus.
Yup.It's the difference between making observations and relying on authority.
Yup.

I edited the post.Eratosthenes didn't ride the plane all the way round. He used high-school math.
But Eratosthenes only calculated the curvature of hump he was living on. He presumed the curvature continued.
Right. Presuming the earth was spherical.Eratosthenes didn't presume. He extrapolated.
Right. Presuming the earth was spherical.
Sort of the way you rely on authority to assert the earth is moving.Sort of the way you presume the universe is surrounded by a giant water bubble? I mean, you haven't taken a plane out there, have you?![]()
So that's a no, you've never taken the plane to the big bubble.Sort of the way you rely on authority to assert the earth is moving.![]()
