What's the problem?  The article is not excusing or justifying pedophilia.  I give the guy credit for coming clean.  He probably can't help having those desires, maybe they result from the abuse that he endured as a child.  But he knows they are wrong and admits it.  Far better to do that than "stay in the closet" and possibly act on those urges in the future,

I don't see where a support group that "provides an online discussion forum for people that are attracted to children but do not want to act on it" is legitimizing his feelings.  The members clearly know that their urges are wrong and are seeking help from others in the same boat.  Again, I give them credit for doing so.  If they can find spiritual help, all the better.  And I don't see where Salon is legitimizing their perverted desires by simply writing about them.

Pedophilia can be treated.  " Although most experts do not think a person's feelings of pedophilia are curable, therapy may help them manage those feelings and not act on them."

"Some patients at high risk of committing sexual offenses may need medications to reduce their sex drive."

Although murderers and pedophiles are not comparable unless the pedophile becomes a child molester, I would have chosen an adjective other than "virtuous" to identify the ones who don't.

Society appears to have little interest in helping pedophiles but it certainly has no interest in "mainstreaming" them.  From my observation, the only thing society wants to do is throw the book at them and hang them from the highest tree once they cross the line.

Harsh sentences? Ummm... 18 months in prison (with good behavior) is hardly harsh. You can get more for smoking weed and tax fraud. These so-called "harsh sentences" will certainly be diminished. Since the entry for these diagnoses are considered obsolete, there is only a movement to render any prison sentences - obsolete.
