GRACE Report on BJU Sexual Abuse Cases Released

“I would like to sincerely and humbly apologize to those who felt they did not receive from us genuine love, compassion, understanding and support after suffering sexual abuse or assault …To them I would say—we have carefully listened to your voice. We take your testimony in this report to our hearts. We intend to thoroughly review every aspect and concern outlined in the investigation and respond appropriately.”
— Steve Pettit, BJU President

You will never find a Godly statement like that coming out of HAC.

Godly? No. It is NOT because people "felt" it was because their behavior was atrocious. They told victims not to report sex abuse to the police to spare the pervs and their own reputation.

Also, please note BJU tried to stop this investigation last January by firing GRACE. Only after considerable outside criticism did they allow GRACE to finish and publish the report.

Godly statement?

It completely glosses over the fact that abuse happened at BJU and away from BJU and when notifed that a crime had been committed BJU FAILED to call the police!!  This is criminal negelience and what was BJU's response...we were ignorant of the law.  And if you believe that then I have some land I need to sell you.

Right you are, Amazed by Grace. Everything you said is true. Everything.

And you still won't find a statement that Godly coming out of HAC.

Vince, to be fair, HAC would never even submit to a GRACE Investigation, though it desperately needs to.

God would have to harden their hearts to their own destruction. For decades, lying, cover-up, slander, and falsification of records have been solid policies of HAC.

HAC doesn't need GRACE any more than BJU did. They should just get up and confess the truth. In general terms, GRACE didn't discover anything that BJU didn't already know.

I'm no fan of Petit... however, he is new on the scene. I think we need to see how BJU responds w/n the next 90 days.

The BJU incidents aren't funny, but a comedy side has developed.

Decades ago, I taught school in a church where the pastor's wife had a lot of power. When a parent would launch a slander campaign on a teacher who made a child behave, the pastor's wife would back the parent.

Decades later, I am friends with several of my former students on Facebook. The wife is afraid that I will start talking about some of the things that happened and has sent me a nasty personal message about what will happen if I say anything. Ignoring her, I continue these friendships. I posted a short paragraph on the BJU scandal, and she showed up on my wall to point out that some of the Godliest teachers they had were from BJU. (And that statement is true).

It's too bad she backed up parents who slandered those Godly teachers.

BJU knew about the GRACE report findings and recs before the rest of us did. So far I am not impressed with their response (I acknowledge they are still in their 90 day transition, but this one is a no-brainer.):

"Despite the GRACE Report’s recommendations that Dr. Berg no longer teach counseling, he is still on the spring class schedule for
Crisis Counseling:"

From BJU:
SCM 635: Crisis Counseling 3 CR.
Presents biblical strategies for handling the crisis of suicide;
extensive coverage of childhood sexual abuse; offers help in
understanding the nature of abuse and biblical help for overcoming the effects of abuse. Examines the recover/12-step movement from a biblical standpoint; looks at the crisis of life- dominating sins (addictions); presents a biblical view of sin; help for working with eating disorders, drugs and alcohol; covers the crisis of immorality; teaches a biblical views of sex; gives help for dealing with pornography, homosexuality, adultery, etc.

[me: keep spreading that poison, BJU!]

It has been very very quite, hasn't it?

Extremely.

John Piper responded to the PR "apology" video with the word "Encouraging", while not saying anything after the actual report was released.

Of course, no IFBx mannogawd has made a public statement (if you know of one, please link).

Just hearing lots and lots of crickets. IMHO, and only IMHO, some are scared to poke their head up into view for fear they could be next.

I've only seen the story referenced here and in the Biblical Recorder, the  NC SBC newspaper. If I hadn't seen that story, I wouldn't even know about it.

Maybe too few are even aware of it.

Our church has a few BJU students, and nothing was said. Also have a lot of BJU graudates and nothing was said.  Dont think it is widely talked about.

It has been widely reported by major news agencies:

I could post many, many more links.

The news of this has certainly been widely reported, it seems no one in leadership wants to speak publicly about it.

I missed those links in my day to day activity.
I did read it in BR hard copy edition and saw you post here.
If the story can gain some traction, some in leadership may feel pressure to respond in some way.

Washington Post, USA Today, Reuters, and the New York Times is quite a bit of traction. I would hate to think the only source of news some people get is the 6pm news on TV.

Their silence has nothing to do with them being poorly informed.

You miss my point or I communicated it poorly.
I would like to see some in so called leadership offer comment or commentary on this. But, the story has not gained traction or caused enough outside interest to pressure some comment or action from them. I have no doubt but that they are aware of the story, they just don't feel compelled to action.

At least, that's my take on the subject.

BJU President Pettit addressed the students during chapel and put a hard spin on the GRACE Report situation - even going so far as lying. Obviously they wanted no record of this, so did not offer a recording. A member of the audience audio recorded it. They just can't make that many people keep their secrets.

Pettit totally glossed over their totally unqualified, completely incompetent, fake doctor Jim Berg problem and is sending the students home for Christmas break with a list of talking points to answer the inevitable questions they will be asked:

(excerpt)

"We have a solid approach toward counseling people where we are helping those who have been… who have experienced sexual abuse or assault. We actually have it in place. And it doesn’t mean that things can’t happen, but I just want you to know that the picture that is presented in [the] GRACE report, I think, it really looks a little different than things do today in what we’re doing here. And I do want you to know the answers that I’ve given to people or reporters or anybody who wants to talk to me about the GRACE report. And really, I try to give a very consistent message. Now, I’m saying these following things, and when you go home at Christmas and people ask you these things, I would encourage you to follow along, you know, if this is what you’re willing to do, this line of thinking, you can think about it yourself. "
