HAC Honorary Doctorate Recipients

I think the juries still out on this one. Bro. Hyles once said that a preacher should always run HAC. Stuart Mason was a pastor.

I would think that they gave SM a doctorate to give their president credibility.
When is a doctorate a requirement to be a college president? Most college president are only there to raise money.

He's a good man who was given a horrible situation.

On each of these I am asking myself, "What 'accomplishment' was there in their ministry to merit an Honorary Doctorate?"  On this one I have no idea.

I heard it was issued as a kind of threat. "Keep your mouth shut about my 'indiscretions'. Here's a little reward for you. An honor conferred upon you at Youth Conference. Very public. You wouldn't want to mess this up, would you?"

The timing on that was totally amazing!
Had a FBC/HAC insider in our town the Saturday before the floodgate opened up on Monday in July 2012. He was showing me pictures of Dr. Mason, then a few days later......, poor guy!

Pastor Tom Neal (Retired)
Berean Baptist Church, Orange Park, Florida

Don't know.
1. Can't think of a book he authored.
2. He did publish a paper with plenty of original articles.
3. Was he a leader in his field?

He was a leader in the fawning over Jack Hyles.

He covered up his son's immorality by confiscating the evidence.

Quite right. Other than pastoring there is no type accomplishment for SM. However what he has done in holding HAC together is rather remarkable. We may look back in 10 years and say he is deserving because off how he saved HAC.

Oh brother. This sounds like classic jack schaap! (lower case on purpose)

What remarkable thing has he done to hold it together and/or save it?  There are pastors out there who would send their kids to HAC if Charles Manson was the President.  Your comment baffles me.  Please explain.

I have to ask the same question on this one.

I remember Marc Rhodes. I believe he received one in the late 90s sometime.  Been to his Church in Florida a few times, enjoyed it very much.

Darrell Moore
Former director FBMI Mission Board, Hammond

Give me a break!
He was the Dean of the Evening College for 12 years, then ran the Mission Board for another 10... In HAC-land he is well deserved.

Even in HAC-land terms I can't make this one work.

Interesting to watch this thread develop.  The argument is that some people were not "worthy" to receive an honorary doctorate from HAC.  How does one become "worthy" and in whose eyes must they achieve this "worthiness?"  I find it interesting that people are primarily declaring their judgment (who are they to proclaim worthiness?) based upon personal opinion of the individual.

The HACker who critiques HAC is a HACker still.

Binaca, I have actually tried to approach this thread with an open mind.  The topic is not whether or not there should be Honorary Doctorates, but rather whether those who were given the doctorates were worthy by definition.

HAC is all about building soul winning churches of the FBCH stripe.  I have found that many whose names have been brought up on this thread were indeed "worthy" of the honor.  There are also several that make you stop and shake your head.

Way to throw a wet towel on an entertaining thread!  There's a whole forum on Bible Versions if you would like spiritual discussion. (giggle)  We're HACkers!  Of course we're going to criticize, judge, and deem worthiness!  We were taught by the BEST!!!!!

Still, it is interesting to see that recipients are counted "worthy" by some posters, and "not worthy" by other posters.  It is interesting to see how opinions and personalities vary on who should have received a reward of recognition.

I agree.  I was trying to set personalities aside and look at the individual's complete body of work.  I viewed a guy taking or starting a church and "building" it into a larger ministry a worthy candidate.

Paul already answer the question... "You 'grew' a big church. Who cares?"

We traveled with tour groups occasionally.  One spring tour we went to a little church in Northern Illinois pastored by a HAC grad.  I would say the church consisted mostly of homeless people.  I vividly remember feeling more welcomed by them than we did the "big name" churches we went to.  We also went to a smallish church in Western Illinois pastored by another HAC grad.  Felt the same way there.  When we left there I thought to myself..."Now THESE guys are doing it.  They are reaching a segment of society that many others won't "waste their time" on."  They didn't live in lavish homes.  The didn't drive expensive vehicles.  They don't send dozens of kids to HAC.  They were just some of the most humble and sincere servants of God I've ever met.  In my opinion, THEY are deserving of honor for the work they are doing.

That's the problem with giving out "honorary doctorates" in the first place.  We don't really know who is worthy and who is not.  Maybe they aren't growing the largest Sunday school in the world.  But, as far as I know, they aren't molesting teenagers either.  Maybe they are reaching the person who will change the world for Christ. Only God knows.  Let's leave the honoring up to Him.

I agree with most of your post.  The difference is that Honorary Doctorates go to those with visibly measurable success.  It also takes place at state universities that give Honorary Doctorates.  It would be hard to measure success for this purpose any other way.

Possibly a poor illustration, buy take two students that go through college.  One student has "brains" and grades come very easy for him.  He studies very little and gets straight "A"s.  A second student struggles academically.  He spends countless hours studying and has a "C" average.  When graduation comes the first student graduates Magna cum laude.  The second student gets a diploma.  Is it fair?

Mar 9:34  But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.
Mar 9:35  And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

IMHO all the doctor big bottoms who talk so much of rewards will be sadly disappointed when they get to Heaven. It's people who are not even noticed down here that will get the rewards up there.

doctor big bottoms, not so much they've all-ready got their rewards down here.
